One should generate mindfulness. O Kashyapa, a monk practicing alms-round should not be familiar with families, should not be familiar with men, should not be familiar with women, should not be familiar with boys, and should not be familiar with girls. In whatever house he performs pure alms-round, he should sit on a seat in that house and speak Dharma until the pure alms-round is completed. Then, having taken the alms, he should rise from the seat and depart. O Kashyapa, a monk practicing alms-round should not boast, should not hoard, and should not be hypocritical. What is boasting? It is saying these words to others: 'My alms are bad, my alms are coarse, I have never eaten like this before, my alms are shared with many people, I eat little, I am not full, my body is weak.' Like this, any sign of boasting is hypocrisy of the mind. A monk practicing alms-round should not do any of these. Whatever comes into the bowl, whether it is bad or good, little or much, clean or unclean, one should eat it. In order to be completely free from suffering, in order to have a completely pure mind, in order to remember the Dharma more, in order to nourish the body, and in order to firmly approach the noble path, one should eat these alms. O Kashyapa, if a monk practicing alms-round begs for alms in a village, city, or town and does not find any, and returns empty like a washed bowl, he should remember the Tathagata. The Tathagata, with the splendor of merit, renounced the kingdom of a Chakravartin and went forth, offered to by gods, nagas, yakshas, and gandharvas, having abandoned all non-virtuous dharmas, endowed with all virtuous dharmas, free from all afflictions, even if he went for alms and returned empty like a washed bowl, why should I, who am so lacking in merit and have not accumulated roots of virtue, be discouraged by returning empty like a washed bowl? Why is that? Because of virtue.

Because the root has not been generated, good food cannot be obtained. If the actions of demons, or the blessings of demons, cause Brahmins and householders not to give me alms, then how should I completely escape from the four demons and be separated from all afflictions? One should think like that. If I remain diligent in this way, the demons and the gods of the demon's retinue will not find an opportunity. Venerable Kashyapa, a bhikkhu, by practicing alms, should thus completely purify the noble lineages. The sixth chapter, on the practice of alms, is complete. Venerable Kashyapa, if a bhikkhu who collects rags, how should he collect rags with his mind? He should do it with a sense of shame and conscientiousness, not with a mind diligent in sewing robes. It is to completely protect against the touch of wind, sun, mosquitoes, flesh flies, and poisonous snakes, not to adorn the body. Because he firmly abides in the scriptures spoken by the Thus-Gone One, he does not particularly like clean clothes. He should take the rags from the pile of rags and generate two perceptions: which two? The perception of contentment and the perception of being easily satisfied. Furthermore, he should generate two perceptions: which two? The perception of no arrogance and the perception of abiding in the noble lineage. Furthermore, he should generate two perceptions: which two? The adornment of the body and the purity of the mind. Venerable Kashyapa, if a bhikkhu, when taking rags from the pile of rags, if he sees former relatives and friends, or people he has talked to before, or people who say "come", fearing that they will mock him and not take that rag, Venerable Kashyapa, I say that such rags taken by the bhikkhu are not pure. Why? Because the bhikkhu should take the rags with a diamond-like determination, with a diamond-like determination without hesitation. After taking that rag, he should wash it well, making it very clean and without dirt.

Then dye it, look for colors, change it well, and sew the monastic robe together. In this way, it will not be damaged later, sew it well, and sew it together well. After sewing it well, wear it. Venerable Bhikshu who wears robes made of rags, in order to pacify desire, abides by contemplating impurity, and wears robes made of rags on his body. In order to pacify hatred, he wears robes made of rags on his body with a mind of loving-kindness. In order to pacify ignorance, he abides in dependent origination and wears robes made of rags on his body. In order to abandon all afflictions, he engages in proper attention and wears robes made of rags on his body. In order to fully understand the six sense bases, he guards the senses well and wears robes made of rags on his body. In order to please the gods, nagas, and yakshas, he wears robes made of rags on his body without hypocrisy or flattery. Venerable, why is it called robes made of rags? Venerable, for example, no one generates desire for rags, no one generates attachment to them, and no one accepts them, because rags are discarded things. Venerable, similarly, like rags, without self, without attachment, easy to obtain, numerous, without having to beg from others, without having to look at others' faces, without depending on others, discarded like rags. Therefore, it is called robes made of rags, robes made of rags. This is the lineage of sages. This is the pure lineage of noble ones. This is the abode of the lineage of noble ones. This is the reliance of the qualities of training. This is the protector of all aggregates of morality. This is the gate of the aggregate of samadhi. This is the support of the aggregate of wisdom. This is the place where the aggregate of liberation arises. This is in accordance with the aggregate of seeing the wisdom of liberation. Venerable, in this way, robes made of rags have many qualities, many opportunities, no opportunities, and are unsurpassed, becoming stainless and becoming bearable. Venerable, the Bhikshu who wears robes made of rags and is content with robes made of rags, the gods will also rejoice.
