Transform! Shariputra, in such a time as this, there is such a benefit. Just as a monk holding a tattered broom, wearing ragged Dharma robes, dwells in the bliss of meditative concentration, even Indra, Brahma, and the protectors of the world will join their palms and bow their heads to his feet. What need is there to mention other gods? Shariputra, monks who are diligent in mending Dharma robes, but not diligent in yoga, who indulge in bodily adornment, practice external cleanliness, but whose minds are filled with the defilements of desire, hatred, and ignorance, no matter how fine the clothes they wear, Shariputra, those are not forms pleasing to the gods. Why is that? The gods know the minds and mental events of those who are diligent in bodily conduct, and knowing this, they will distance themselves and completely abandon them. Shariputra, when a diligent monk, holding a tattered broom stained with impurities, goes to the lake after begging for alms, the gods dwelling in that sacred lake will greet him from afar, bowing their heads to his feet. Those gods who practice cleanliness will personally wash those tattered brooms stained with impurities, making them clean and spotless. The monk with defilements will smear the washed water on his body, and knowing that the diligent one has truly attained the merits of discipline and dwells in meditative concentration, the gods of that lake will prostrate with five limbs. A person named "Sarvatrabhadda," wearing clean clothes, goes to the lake after begging for alms, but the gods dwelling in that lake scold him, saying, "If you eat food here by the sacred lake and leave leftovers, you will make the sacred lake impure!" They do not even allow him to make a sound within a radius of one yojana. Shariputra, look at the distinction between cultivating the merits of the noble Dharma, and how the gods smear the impure water from washing the tattered broom of the diligent one on their bodies, while "Sarvatrabhadda" is not even allowed to approach. Shariputra, therefore, monks who wish to attain such qualities of Dharma as these, should not become discouraged, but should be of noble lineage.

Dwelling on the ground, with the thought of a stupa, with the thought of the teacher, with the thought of no self and no attachment, one should wear tattered patched robes on the body. Thus, the mind purifies the body, but the body does not purify the mind. Therefore, one should purify the mind, for the purification of the body is not as important as the purification of the mind. The purification of the mind is said to be the practice of celibacy in the teachings of the Blessed One, so one should think with certainty. Kashyapa, therefore, a monk who wears patched robes should learn as you and I do. Kashyapa, at this time, there are such benefits. Kashyapa, wearing worn-out robes, content with worn-out robes, whenever you sit on a cushion or seat of robes, when you walk in the walking place wearing your upper robe, hundreds of thousands of gods will come there and say: This is the robe worn by a body completely imbued with discipline, meditation, and wisdom! They will prostrate to your robe. Kashyapa, look! Even the robe is prostrated to, what need is there to mention the body? Kashyapa, how should my disciples practice? I renounced the kingdom of a wheel-turning king and went forth, abandoning fine cotton cloth, Dugula cloth, Kotamba cloth, and patterned robes, and because I loved the lineage of the noble ones, I wore robes of Shanala cloth on my body. Kashyapa, I took the worn-out silk clothes from you, and I gave you Shana cloth, all of which was not because of affection for you, nor because of attachment, nor to adorn the body. Kashyapa, some foolish people do not learn from you and me, and are overwhelmed by the power of greed and attachment, accumulating robes and other things, accumulating bowls and other things, accumulating worldly possessions and other things, accumulating conch shells, gold, jewels, and grains, etc., Cows, sheep, chickens, pigs, donkeys, horses, plows, and chariots are also kept nearby, abandoning the boundaries of household affairs.

Those who are endowed with conduct, the upasakas will have distinctions, but for the foolish renunciates who have transgressed the boundaries, there will be no distinction whatsoever. The reason why upasakas have distinctions is that those who are not ascetics but claim to be ascetics, not practicing celibacy but claiming to practice celibacy, wearing robes but having many affairs, being defiled by various impurities, and being attached to food and clothing, when laypeople see them wearing robes, they will generate faith and respect, and offer them robes and alms, speaking respectfully, prostrating, and rising. O Sugata, this is the distinction between those laypeople and them, but the renunciates do not have it. Why is that? Because they are not diligent in upholding the precepts and do not fear anything. O Sugata, at that time, most monks will have many alms bowls and robes, many utensils, and many gains, and they will be respected and honored, and they will be treated with reverence and offerings. Why is that? Because they will give and return offerings at the right time and uphold the Dharma as it is. But those monks who are endowed with morality, possess good qualities, are diligent in eradicating defilements, have renunciation, are diligent as if their heads and clothes were on fire, are content with little, focus on their own practice, and completely abandon friendships, at that time, no one will go near them, and they will not rely on or respect them. Why is that? Because laypeople have the nature of attachment, only care about this life, and do not care about the next life, so they will think: those monks are of no benefit to us, why should we offer to them? Why should we prostrate? Why should we respect them? On the other hand, those who cultivate virtuous roots, have perfect past causes, are pure in morality, and possess such good qualities, they...
