One should hold on to the notion that there is no dharma that is truly born or ceases. O Sunetra, a monk dwelling in solitude should abide in solitude by practicing the Dharma in this way. One who abides in such a Dharma will quickly become distinguished as either a follower of the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, or the Bodhisattva Vehicle. If one becomes a follower of the Hearer Vehicle, one will quickly attain the fruit. If one is obscured by karmic obscurations and does not attain the fruit, one will not pass beyond two or three Tathagatas before one's mind is completely liberated from the outflows. If one becomes a follower of the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, one will quickly attain self-awakening. If one becomes a follower of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, then in this very life one will attain the forbearance of non-arising dharmas, and one will see the Buddha without obscuration. Having seen the Buddha without obscuration, one will quickly awaken to unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. When this chapter on solitude was taught, five hundred monks, without taking anything, had their minds completely liberated from the outflows. This is the fifth chapter on solitude. O Sunetra, how does a monk practice alms-begging? O Sunetra, here, a monk who practices alms-begging should train in this way: 'I abide in the food of alms-begging, having gone forth into the well-spoken Dharma and Discipline, and I should abide in my previous aspirations and vows.' A monk who practices alms-begging, endowed with superior intention, should not be greedy, not hypocritical, not flattering, not have the mind of inviting guests, not defile the gains of the Sangha, and should be steadfast in mind. He should not generate the perception of savoring the taste of good foods at all times and in all places. He should think thus: 'I will not purify my body with food that should purify the body and mind, like a low-born person.' Why is that? Because however much delicious food is eaten, in the end it will all flow out as pus. In the end, it is discordant. In the end, it is foul-smelling. Therefore, I should not desire good things,' he should train thus. He should do so.
