It is not for the sake of being free from attachment, not for the sake of cessation, not for the sake of pacification, not for the sake of complete enlightenment, not for the sake of a śrāmaṇa, not for the sake of Brahmā, not for the sake of nirvāṇa. Kāśyapa, this is called a śrāmaṇa of expressed verses. Kāśyapa, what is a śrāmaṇa who truly practices? Kāśyapa, if someone does not even care about body and life, what need to mention gain, respect, and verses? Having heard the dharmas of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, they rejoice and enter into suchness. Even if they practice without desire for nirvāṇa, what need to mention delighting in the three realms? If they do not even desire to see emptiness, what need to mention seeing self, sentient beings, life, the born, the nourisher, the person, and the individual as real? Rely on meaning, not on words. Seek liberation from afflictions within, not running outside. Because they see all dharmas as completely pure and naturally free from all afflictions, they themselves are their own refuge, not another's refuge. If they do not even see the Tathāgata as dharmatā, what need to mention the form body? If they do not even see detachment from dharma as real, what need to mention expressing it through the path of speech? If they do not even discriminate against the noble, unconditioned saṃgha, what need to mention discriminating against a large gathering? They do not strive to abandon any dharma, not for the sake of cultivation, not for the sake of realization. They will not be reborn in saṃsāra, nor will they delight in nirvāṇa, nor will they cling to liberation, nor is it bondage, but knowing that all dharmas are naturally nirvāṇa, they do not wander everywhere, nor do they completely enter nirvāṇa. Kāśyapa, this is called a śrāmaṇa who truly practices. Kāśyapa, one should strive to become a śrāmaṇa who truly practices, and should not be harmed by name. Kāśyapa, the śrāmaṇa is these four. To that, it is said: Whoever has body, speech, and mind that are not virtuous, untamed, unguarded, unpurified, and has great desire, shaves their head, wears monastic robes,

Holding an alms bowl in hand. This is shown to be a practitioner in outward appearance. Possessing rituals and practices, etc., Relying on food, the way of begging, attire, etc. Completely abandoning noise and keeping away from crowds, Even if their conduct is in accordance with the lineage of the noble ones, They do not do all of this for the sake of taming. Not for the sake of peace, not for the sake of renunciation. Perceiving praise as a nameless cliff, Protecting rituals and pretending, is the second type of person. Hearing the merits of practicing discipline and samadhi, They do it to impress others. Not for the sake of peace, not for the sake of renunciation. Desiring speech and fame, is the third type of practitioner. Some do not care about their body and life, Turning their backs on gain and respect. Having heard the door to liberation, They do not seek the benefit of all beings in samsara. Having completely examined all dharmas as empty and illusory, They will not see nirvana or non-nirvana. Regarding the Dharma, Always realize to be free from attachment. Realizing the uncreated Dharma, one will attain nirvana. Light Protector, for example, if a poor person Is named "Treasure Wealth," Light Protector, what do you think? Does that poor person match that name? They replied: Lord, it is not so. The Lord Buddha said: Light Protector, similarly, Whether they are practitioners or Brahmins, Those who do not possess the qualities of practitioners and Brahmins, I say that they are the poor in this scripture. To this, it should be said: For example, a person who has become poor, Being named "Possessing Treasure" is not beautiful for him. A practitioner with bad conduct, the name of a practitioner is not beautiful. This is like naming a poor person rich. Light Protector, for example, if someone is carried away by the great ocean, And dies of thirst in the water, Similarly, Light Protector, some practitioners and Brahmins learn many Dharmas, Although they understand everything, they cannot extinguish the burning of desire, They cannot extinguish the thirst of hatred, They cannot extinguish the thirst of ignorance, These people are carried away by the ocean of Dharma, And will eventually die of the thirst of afflictions, They will fall into the lower realms. To this, it should be said: For example, a person is carried away by the great ocean, He dies of thirst.
