The Chapter of the Venerable Kāśyapa, called the Great Vehicle Sutra. The Chapter of the Venerable Kāśyapa, called the Great Vehicle Sutra. The forty-third chapter from the hundred thousand chapters of the Dharma category of the Great Heap of Jewels, namely, the Prophecy Requested by the Venerable Kāśyapa. Volume One. In Sanskrit: Ārya-kāśyapa-parivarta-mahāyāna-sūtra. In Tibetan: The Chapter of the Venerable Kāśyapa, called the Great Vehicle Sutra. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was on Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha (present-day Rajgir), with a great monastic community of eight thousand monks, and sixty thousand Bodhisattvas gathered from various Buddha-fields, all of whom were bound by one birth to perfect enlightenment and abiding in the same means. At that time, the Venerable Great Kāśyapa also joined that assembly and sat down. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Great Kāśyapa: "Kāśyapa, these four things cause the wisdom of Bodhisattvas to completely degenerate. What are the four? They are: disrespect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma; being stingy with the Dharma and concealing the teacher's instructions on the Dharma; creating obstacles to the Dharma for those who desire the Dharma, preventing their aspirations, causing them to be disturbed, not teaching and concealing it thoroughly; praising oneself and disparaging others with pride. Kāśyapa, these four things cause the wisdom of Bodhisattvas to completely degenerate." To this it should be said: There is no respect for the speaker of the Dharma, and one becomes stingy with the Dharma, and hides the teacher's instructions on the Dharma. Obstacles are created for those who desire the Dharma, and likewise, they are disturbed. The Dharma praised by the Victorious One is not shown. The lazy one is always diligent in praising himself, delights in slandering others. These four things, the Victorious One said, cause the wisdom of the sons of the Victorious One to degenerate. These four things should be completely abandoned, and the Victo-

Obeisance to the four dharmas spoken by the Blessed One. O Protector, these four dharmas are the cause of the great wisdom of a Bodhisattva. What are the four? They are as follows: To be respectful of the Dharma and those who speak it; to have a mind free from distractions, without seeking gain or honor; not hoping for verses, to extensively and accurately teach others the dharmas as they have been heard and understood; knowing that wisdom arises from much learning, to seek learning completely as if one's head or clothes were on fire, and to hold the dharmas as they have been heard. To make diligence the essence, not taking speech and eloquent words as the main thing. O Protector, these four dharmas are the cause of the great wisdom of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, it is said: To be respectful of those who speak the Dharma; without distractions, without hope for gain or honor; not thinking of verses, to teach others the dharmas as they have been heard. Knowing that wisdom arises from hearing, like a fire on the head, always seek hearing. That is to hold the dharmas as they have been heard. Having held the Dharma, one abides for the sake of diligence. The wise make diligence the essence, not taking eloquent words as the main thing, not taking speech as the main thing. If the wise cultivate these four dharmas, they will obtain the wisdom praised by the Victorious Ones. O Protector, if a Bodhisattva possesses four dharmas, they will forget the mind of enlightenment. What are the four? They are as follows: Deceiving teachers, lamas, and those who are worthy of offerings; causing regret to those who have no regret; uttering unpraiseworthy, unpleasant, and unspeakable words to sentient beings who have entered the Great Vehicle; using deceit and flattery towards others, not with a sincere intention. O Protector, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four dharmas, they will forget the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, it is said: Not practicing as taught by the teachers who are the objects of offerings; causing others to have doubts; speaking unpraiseworthy and unpleasant words to those sentient beings who have entered the path of enlightenment; abandoning deceit and flattery, not treating others with a sincere mind.
