If one always relies on these four dharmas, one will lose the Buddha's bodhicitta. Therefore, if one relies on this dharma, one will be far from the supreme bodhi. If one relies on the opposite of this, one will attain the praise of supreme bodhi. Maitreya, if a bodhisattva possesses four dharmas, then in all lifetimes, as soon as they are born, the bodhicitta will manifest, and they will not forget until they dwell under the bodhi tree. What are the four? They are: not speaking false words for the sake of life, or even for the sake of laughter; dwelling with superior intention in front of all sentient beings without hypocrisy or deceit; generating the perception of the teacher for all bodhisattvas and proclaiming their true praises in the four directions; and because they do not desire the lesser vehicle, all those who cause sentient beings to mature, they cause them to truly uphold the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Maitreya, a bodhisattva who possesses these four dharmas, in all lifetimes, as soon as they are born, the bodhicitta will manifest, and they will not forget until they dwell under the bodhi tree. To this, it should be said: For the sake of life, do not speak falsehoods, and always speak meaningful words. Always abandon hypocrisy and deceit, and always look at sentient beings with superior intention. For the goodness and bodhi that sentient beings enter, regard that bodhisattva as a teacher. Having closely established the thought of the teacher, proclaim their praises in the four directions. All those who cause sentient beings to mature, cause them to uphold unsurpassed wisdom. Those who dwell well in those dharmas will never forget the bodhicitta. Maitreya, if a bodhisattva possesses four dharmas, then the virtuous dharmas that are born and arise will be completely exhausted, and will not be increased by those virtuous dharmas. What are the four? They are: seeking secret words that are far from the world with pride; looking at the household with particular attachment to gain and respect; generating hatred and slander towards bodhisattvas; and not having heard

Abandoning the sutras that have been grasped. A Bodhisattva, endowed with these four qualities, all virtuous qualities that arise and occur will be completely exhausted, and those virtuous qualities will not increase. It is said: Arrogant people seek to distance themselves from the world, associate with householders for gain, hate Bodhisattvas, sons of the Buddha, and speak ill of them everywhere. They abandon the sutras they have not heard or grasped, and abandon the teachings of the Sugata. Those who possess these qualities will not increase in virtuous qualities. Therefore, wise Bodhisattvas should completely abandon these four qualities. Relying on these will make enlightenment extremely distant, even more distant than the distance between heaven and earth. A Bodhisattva, endowed with these four qualities, will become extraordinary and possess the quality of non-decline. What are the four? They are: Endowed with the six perfections, one strives to seek the Bodhisattva's treasury, seeks to hear well, and does not seek faults. Because one has no arrogance towards all beings, one's mind is like a dog. One is content with the gains of the Dharma, completely abandons wrong livelihood, and is content with the noble lineage. One does not comment on whether others' views arise or not, and does not seek others' faults. For those profound Buddhist teachings that one's mind cannot comprehend, the Buddha's enlightenment is infinite, and the Tathagatas teach the Dharma to beings with different inclinations. The Tathagatas themselves know, but I do not know. The Tathagatas have manifested, and will not abandon. A Bodhisattva, endowed with these four qualities, will become extraordinary and possess the quality of non-decline. It is said: He is always associated with the perfections, skillful means, and diligence in the Bodhi treasury. Because he has no arrogance, with the mind of a dog, he destroys the arrogance of all beings. He is content with gains that are in accordance with the Dharma, and all his livelihood abides in the noble lineage. He does not seek the faults of others.
