The Śramaṇa with complete limbs, and the Śramaṇa who truly practices. O Light-protector, what is the Śramaṇa with color, marks, and form? O Light-protector, here, some monks possess color, marks, and form, wear Dharma robes and kasayas, shave their heads and beards, and carry begging bowls in their hands, but their bodily actions are not pure, their verbal actions are not pure, and their mental actions are not pure. They are untamed, unpacified, unguarded, unrefined, their livelihoods are impure, they are greedy, lazy, their discipline is corrupt, and they commit sinful deeds. O Light-protector, this is called the Śramaṇa with color, marks, and form. O Light-protector, what is the Śramaṇa who guards rituals and is artificial? O Light-protector, here, some monks are complete in rituals, conduct, and behavior, and consciously practice the four postures. They eat and drink poor food, are content with the four noble lineages, particularly enjoy remote dwellings, do not associate with householders and renunciates, speak briefly, and say little, but their behavior is also artificial and measured by hypocrisy. It is not for the sake of completely purifying their minds, not for the sake of taming, not for the sake of pacifying, but for the sake of observing objects of focus. They abide in self-grasping and grasping at what belongs to self, regard the Dharma of emptiness without objects of focus as a cliff, and even regard the monks who proclaim emptiness as enemies. O Light-protector, this is called the Śramaṇa who guards rituals and is artificial. O Light-protector, what is the Śramaṇa who speaks words with complete limbs? O Light-protector, here, some monks think: How can I make others know that I possess discipline? So they separately contemplate and guard discipline. How can I make others know that I am learned? So they separately contemplate and uphold learning. How can I make others know that I live in solitude? So they separately contemplate and live in solitude, separately contemplating and abiding in few desires and contentment, and become very solitary. Like this, it is for the sake of showing others, not for the sake of feeling weary, desire
