Do not revel in play! Kāśyapa, in the future, there will be monks who are like dogs chasing stones. Kāśyapa, how is a monk like a dog chasing stones? Kāśyapa, for example, a dog is afraid of a stone, but chases after the stone itself, not the one who threw the stone. Kāśyapa, similarly, some monks and Brahmins, fearing and being frightened by forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects, dwell in secluded places, living alone without a second person, their bodies completely isolated. If those forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects that cause attachment appear, they ignore them, dwelling in a state of diminished virtue and attachment, diligently engaging in discrimination within their dwellings. They do not know or understand where those forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects come from. Because they do not know or understand this, even if they go to villages, cities, towns, regions, districts, and around the royal palace, they will be harmed by forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects. If they die while dwelling in a secluded place, those who abide by worldly vows will be reborn in the heavenly realms. There, they will also be harmed by the five desirable qualities of the gods. After dying and transmigrating from there, they will still not be completely liberated from the four lower realms. Which four? They are: the hell beings, the animal realm, the realm of Yama, and the Asuras. Kāśyapa, that is how monks are like dogs chasing stones. Kāśyapa, how is one not like a dog chasing stones? Kāśyapa, no matter who scolds, one does not scold back; no matter who is angry, one does not become angry in return; no matter who reveals shortcomings, one does not reveal shortcomings in return; no matter who strikes, one does not strike back; no matter who threatens, one does not threaten; no matter who slanders, one does not slander back, but inwardly discriminates in the mind, thinking, 'What are these actions of scolding, being angry, striking, threatening, slandering, and revealing shortcomings?' Kāśyapa, that is how a monk is like a dog.

It is not the same as chasing after sticks. It is said like this: For example, even if a dog is frightened by a stone, it does not chase after the one who threw it, but chases after the stone. Likewise, some ascetics and Brahmins, frightened by forms and so on, dwell in solitude. Even though they dwell in solitude, if they see beautiful forms and so on, they abandon equanimity and do not understand the inner nature. Because they do not know where that fault comes from, they return to the village again. There, too, they are harmed by forms and so on. Here, too, having enjoyed the pleasures of the gods, some of them, having passed away from gods and humans, will fall into the places of evil destinies. Those foolish ones, having died, will become suffering. Those who have a hundred sufferings like that, the Sugata said, are like dogs chasing after stones. Even if reviled, they do not revile back; even if glared at or beaten, they do not strike back; whoever slanders, they do not slander; likewise, whoever exposes faults, they do not expose faults; even if angered, they do not become angry; they seek what becomes the antidote to the enemy of the inner mind, pacify the mind, and are endowed with mindfulness. Those who possess such discipline and conduct, the Victorious One said, are not like dogs chasing after sticks. Light Protector, just as an expert in taming horses thoroughly trains the horse where and where it moves, and where it is not yet tamed. Light Protector, likewise, a Bhikshu who practices yoga also sees where and where the mind changes, and engages in thorough practice there and there, so that it will not be confused later, thus thoroughly taming the mind. It is said like this: Just as an expert in taming horses thoroughly tames the horse so that it is tamed and does not move. The yogi also sees the mind changing, and tames it so that it will not be confused later. Light Protector, just as in the throat, Lha-or (ལྷ་འོར།) causes the life force to cease. Light Protector, likewise, among all views, clinging to self causes the life force of the Dharma to cease. It is said like this: Just as Lha-or (ལྷ་འོར།) harms the life force and does not give it happiness. Likewise, among all views, the view of self completely destroys the life of the Dharma. Light Protector, for example.
