I call it the correct individual discernment of the Dharma of the Middle Way. Furthermore, Kashyapa, in order to eliminate attachment to the person, it is not that emptiness is not emptiness, but emptiness is also empty. Kashyapa, the past extreme is empty, the future extreme is empty, and what arises in the present is empty. One should rely on emptiness, not on the person. Kashyapa, if someone fixates on the person as emptiness and therefore relies on emptiness, I say that these people have completely fallen from this scripture. Kashyapa, it is easy to cling to a person as being as large as Mount Meru, but it is not so for those with pride to cling to emptiness. Why is that? Kashyapa, what arises from all views is emptiness. Kashyapa, if someone only clings to emptiness, I say that is incurable. Kashyapa, it is like this: if a person is sick, the doctor gives him medicine, and the medicine drives away all his diseases, but the medicine remains in the stomach and is not digested, Kashyapa, what do you think? Will that person be freed from that disease? Answer: Bhagavan, that is not possible. If the medicine drives away all the diseases, but the medicine remains in the stomach and is not digested, then that person's disease will become very serious. The Bhagavan said: Kashyapa, similarly, what arises from all views is emptiness. Kashyapa, if someone only clings to emptiness, I say that is incurable. To that, one should say this: For example, a doctor, in order to eliminate disease, Gave a person a purgative medicine, If the diseases are driven out but not cleansed, Then the disease will not be cured from its base. Similarly, from abiding in dense views, The most excellent that arises is emptiness, If someone only clings to emptiness, Then the Victorious One said that is incurable. Kashyapa, it is like this: if someone is afraid of the sky, beats his chest and says: Eliminate this sky, eliminate this sky. Kashyapa, what do you think? Can that sky be eliminated? Answer: Bhagavan, that is not possible. The Bhagavan said: Kashyapa, similarly, if some monks and Brahmins are afraid of emptiness, very afraid, then

will become greatly disturbed. This is a definite statement. Why is that? Because those Well-Guarded Ones act in emptiness, yet they are frightened by emptiness itself. To this, it can be said: For example, a person threatened by the terror of the sky, a fool will say to clear away this sky. Although it is not possible to clear away the sky, ignorant children will say that. Similarly, any renunciant or Brahmin who is frightened and disturbed by emptiness, those children act in emptiness, but emptiness cannot be destroyed anywhere. Well-Guarded One, this is like a painter who paints a terrifying image of a yaksha of his own making, and then he himself is terrified and falls face down in a faint. Similarly, Well-Guarded One, those ordinary beings are also bound by the forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects they have created, and they wander in samsara, yet they do not fully understand those dharmas as they truly are. To this, it can be said: For example, a painter makes a terrifying image of a yaksha, and he himself is terrified by it, falls face down, and faints. Similarly, all ordinary beings, being deluded by the forms, sounds, etc., that they have created themselves, wander in the six realms. Well-Guarded One, this is like a magician conjuring up an illusion, and then that illusion devouring the magician himself. Similarly, Well-Guarded One, those monks who practice yoga, whatever they think of, all of that appears to be accumulated for them. It appears as hollow, empty, and without essence. To this, it can be said: For example, the illusion manifested by a magician devours him. Similarly, whatever a yogi thinks of appears to him as accumulation and emptiness. Well-Guarded One, this is like two trees being rubbed together by the wind, from which fire arises, and then the fire burns those two trees. Similarly, Well-Guarded One, if there is correct discrimination, the power of the wisdom of the noble ones will arise, and when it arises, it will burn that very correct discrimination. To this, it can be said: For example, two trees
