That which is not pure is called the two extremes. O Light-Protector, where there is no mind, no thought, no intention, and no consciousness, O Light-Protector, this is called truly distinguishing the Dharma of the Middle Way. All dharmas, such as virtue and non-virtue, mundane and supramundane, with faults and without faults, with outflows and without outflows, conditioned and unconditioned, are also the same. O Light-Protector, complete affliction is called one extreme. Complete purification is called the two extremes. That which does not acknowledge, speak of, or utter those two extremes, O Light-Protector, this is called truly distinguishing the Dharma of the Middle Way. O Light-Protector, existence is called one extreme. Non-existence is called the two extremes. What is in the middle of those two? It is that which is beyond thought, beyond expression, not a support, without appearance, without consciousness, without a place. O Light-Protector, this is called truly distinguishing the Dharma of the Middle Way. O Light-Protector, samsara is called one extreme. Nirvana is called the two extremes. What is in the middle of those two? It is that which is beyond thought, beyond expression, not a support, without appearance, without consciousness, without a place. O Light-Protector, this is called truly distinguishing the Dharma of the Middle Way. O Light-Protector, you should know that due to the condition of ignorance, actions arise; due to the condition of actions, consciousness arises; due to the condition of consciousness, name and form arise; due to the condition of name and form, the six sense sources arise; due to the condition of the six sense sources, contact arises; due to the condition of contact, feeling arises; due to the condition of feeling, craving arises; due to the condition of craving, grasping arises; due to the condition of grasping, becoming arises; due to the condition of becoming, birth arises; due to the condition of birth, old age, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and agitation arise. Thus, this great mass of pure suffering arises. When ignorance ceases, actions cease. When actions cease, consciousness ceases.

Ignorance ceases. With the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease. With the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease. With the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases. With the cessation of contact, feeling ceases. With the cessation of feeling, craving ceases. With the cessation of craving, grasping ceases. With the cessation of grasping, becoming ceases. With the cessation of becoming, birth ceases. With the cessation of birth, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and agitation all cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering comes to an end. As taught, for that venerable one, wisdom and ignorance are not two, they are indivisible. Venerable one, whatever knowledge there is, is called the correct and distinct understanding of the Dharma of the Middle Way. Likewise, formations and non-formations, consciousness and the cessation of consciousness, name and form and the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases and the cessation of the six sense bases, contact and the cessation of contact, feeling and the cessation of feeling, the cessation of craving, grasping and the cessation of grasping, becoming and the cessation of becoming, birth and the cessation of birth, old age and death and the cessation of old age and death, these two are not different, they are indivisible. Venerable one, whatever knowledge there is, is called the correct and distinct understanding of the Dharma of the Middle Way. Furthermore, venerable one, the correct and distinct understanding of the Dharma of the Middle Way is that emptiness does not make phenomena empty, but phenomena are themselves empty; signlessness does not make phenomena signless, but phenomena are themselves signless; wishlessness does not make phenomena wishless, but phenomena are themselves wishless; non-fabrication does not make phenomena non-fabricated, but phenomena are themselves non-fabricated; unbornness does not make phenomena unborn, but phenomena are themselves unborn; unarisenness does not make phenomena unarisen, but phenomena are themselves unarisen; selflessness does not make phenomena selfless, but phenomena are themselves selfless. Such distinct understanding is, venerable one
