That which causes purification is purification. Heavenly son, one who does not take, does not delight, does not fixate, does not become arrogant, and does not discriminate, does not purify anything. Why is that? Because it is eternally pure. Heavenly son, therefore, ordinary beings purify with offerings given in faith, but not arhats. Why is that? Ordinary beings take, delight, fixate, become arrogant, discriminate, and discriminate thinking, "I am the taker," and discriminate thinking, "This is the giver," therefore they are purifiers. How do they purify? They accomplish birth in the cycle of existence, and they purify there. Heavenly son, arhats do not accomplish any other body belonging to another existence, therefore they do not purify anything. When they take that alms, they take it with the three circles completely pure. Heavenly son, what is the complete purity of the three circles? They do not fixate on the self that is the taker, they do not fixate on the giver who is the donor, they do not fixate on the alms that should be taken. Heavenly son, this is called the complete purity of the three circles. Heavenly son, one who is pure in that way does not purify again, therefore, having considered that, I say that one who enjoys all the offerings given in faith in all the three thousand great thousand world realms and does not enjoy them is a worthy object of offering in the world, and is a well-ordained one, thus he teaches. Furthermore, Manjushri, become a youth, said this to the heavenly son, Wisdom Abode: Heavenly son, having gone forth in that way and having approached ordination in that way, I say this to him, son of good family, if you do not dwell in the forest, nor in a village, not near, not far, not on a wrong path, not alone, not in the midst of many beings, not in noise, not in solitude, nor practicing alms-round,

Do not..., nor go to entertainments. Do not live constantly in dust. Do not carry inferior bowls and Dharma robes, nor be without a roof. Do not be content with little desire, nor with much desire, nor be content, nor be discontent. Do not be extremely secluded, nor be extremely unsecluded. Do not live under trees, nor live in houses. Do not rely on medicine applied and discarded, nor rely on butter and honey. Son of good family, if you do not fully accept and practice all such qualities of training, then I say that you are endowed with training. Why is that? Son of the gods, if someone thinks, "I am one who lives constantly in dust, I am a beggar, I am one who lives under a tree, I am content with medicine applied and discarded, I am content with little desire, I am content, I am one who lives in solitude, I am without a roof, I am endowed with training," such thoughts are deceptive behaviors of those with pride. Son of the gods, for one who has truly entered, such deceptive behaviors and behaviors that are free from deception do not arise. Why is that? Because for such a person, there is no conceptualization; if even oneself cannot be observed, what need is there to observe the qualities of training, since it is without a place to dwell. Son of the gods, therefore, one who fully accepts and practices those qualities of training, and does not become arrogant, does not conceptualize, then I say that he is endowed with training. Why is that? Son of the gods, if a monk can subdue desire, subdue hatred, subdue ignorance, subdue the three realms, subdue the five aggregates, subdue the eighteen realms, subdue the six internal sense bases and the six external sense bases, and in no way takes, abandons, cultivates, eliminates, or completely eliminates them, then I say that such a person who subdues is endowed with training. Son of the gods, furthermore, to one who has thus gone forth and has fully taken ordination, I say this: Son of good family, if you do not realize the four truths, nor

is not practiced. The four right abandonments are also not practiced. The four miraculous feet are also not practiced. The five faculties are also not practiced. The five powers are also not practiced. The seven branches of enlightenment are also not practiced. The eightfold noble path is also not practiced, and the thirty-seven dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment are also not practiced. They are not directly realized. The three doors of liberation are also not practiced, and not directly realized. If that is the case, you say that you are practicing the dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. Why is that? Son of the gods, that is called contemplating the characteristic of non-arising, because it is not to be practiced and not to be directly realized. Why is that? Non-arising cannot be directly realized. Son of the gods, all the dharmas called the four close placements of mindfulness, because there is no mindfulness and no attention, therefore they are called the four close placements of mindfulness. Son of the gods, if a monk does not abide in the desire realm, nor in the form realm, nor in the formless realm, then that monk who abides without abiding is said to be practicing the four close placements of mindfulness. How does one practice? In no way does one practice, and one does not destroy. Thus one practices, therefore it is called practicing. The same applies to all thirty-seven dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment. Son of the gods, when a yogi, practicing yoga, does not perceive all dharmas, then he does not become arrogant. When he does not become arrogant, then he does not practice. When he does not practice, then he does not directly realize. Why is that? Son of the gods, the thirty-seven dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment are merely names. The name is also unmoving, arising from conditions, and having one characteristic of no characteristic. It can be spoken or not spoken. The complete understanding of the name, because it is without object, therefore the complete understanding of the thirty-seven dharmas that are in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment is seeing the truth. Son of the gods said: Manjushri, yoga practice is yoga practice
