If so, how does a monk practice yoga? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, when the practice of yoga is like this: if all dharmas are united in one way by way of non-arising, therefore it is called the practice of yoga. When one does not cling to anything, therefore it is called the practice of yoga. What does one not cling to? For example, because all dharmas are not real, one does not cling to this world, one does not cling to the other world, one does not cling to the three realms. Therefore it is called the practice of yoga. Son of the gods, when the practice of yoga does not combine any dharma, does not separate, therefore it is called the practice of yoga. Then, from that retinue, many thousands of monks thought: The Blessed One Tathagata attained nirvana by realizing the three doors of liberation, and attained nirvana by directly realizing the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment. If what the Blessed One said is obstructed by Manjushri, then how can the teachings taught by Manjushri be established? Is this teaching contradictory or not unified? Doubts arose in their minds. Then, Manjushri, knowing the thoughts of those monks with his mind, said to the venerable Shariputra: Venerable Shariputra, you are trusted by the Tathagata, endowed with faith, and regarded as the best among those with great wisdom. Shariputra, when you directly realize the dharmas free from desire, does the venerable one contemplate, directly realize, or practice the four noble truths, and the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment and the three doors of liberation? Shariputra said: Manjushri, no. Because there is no dharma that can be directly realized, practiced, or realized. Why? Because all dharmas are ungraspable, unborn, non-discriminating, and empty, so emptiness does not directly realize emptiness with emptiness.

Therefore. When this teaching was taught, three thousand monks did not take (attain fruition), but their minds were completely liberated from all defilements. The fourth chapter is complete. Then, the son of the gods, Blo Gros Rab Gnas, praised the youthful Manjushri, saying, "Well done!" This Manjushri is like this: having understood the profound meaning through differentiation, and abiding in the patience of emptiness, he is the teaching. Well done! Well done! Manjushri said, "Son of the gods, I am not the understanding of differentiation, but all ordinary people are the understanding of differentiation." Why is that? Because they are differentiators. What do they differentiate? They differentiate the hells of sentient beings. They differentiate the birthplaces of animals. They differentiate the world of Yama. They differentiate the three realms. Thus, the beginning of the cycle of those who differentiate and those who universally differentiate is invisible. Son of the gods, ordinary people universally differentiate desire. They universally differentiate hatred. They universally differentiate ignorance. They universally differentiate views. They universally differentiate name and form. Son of the gods, the Buddhas are not the understanding of differentiation. Neither are the Shravakas, nor the Pratyekabuddhas. Neither are the Bodhisattvas who have attained patience, son of the gods, ordinary people are the understanding of differentiation. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, then is it that you understand by differentiating and elaborating? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, it is not. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, then is it necessary to guide? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, it is not. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, then is it good to accept word by word? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, that is exactly so. I am the one who accepts word by word. The son of the gods asked: Manjushri, based on what thought do you declare this? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, any Bodhisattva who does not waver from even a single letter or a single word, and who thoroughly understands the meaning, manner, gateway, and path of that very letter and word as they truly are, and knows that this is emptiness. And knows that this is solitude.

Is the knower. Knows this to be non-existent. Knows this to be unborn. In no way does it discriminate, recognize, or feel, and thus knows it, therefore it is called grasping at words. Then, the Blessed One said to Manjushri, the youthful one, "Well done!" and bestowed his blessing. Manjushri is like this, having attained dharani, he teaches, well done! well done! Manjushri said, "Blessed One, I am not one who has attained dharani. What is the reason for this? Blessed One, children are those who have attained dharani, but Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are not those who have attained dharani." What is the reason for this? Blessed One, children act for the sake of grasping. What do they grasp? They grasp at self. They grasp at sentient beings and life, and they grasp at the person. They grasp at annihilation and permanence, and they grasp at desire and hatred, and ignorance. They grasp at ignorance and craving for existence, and the five aggregates and the destructible, and the eighteen realms and the six internal sense bases, and the six external sense bases. They grasp at conception and various conceptions, and complete conception and complete conception, and the various aspects of views, Blessed One, because it is like that, children are those who have attained dharani. The logicians grasp at conception and various conceptions, and complete conception and the various aspects of views, Blessed One, therefore children are those who have attained dharani. What is the reason for this? Whatever dharmas children grasp, the Buddhas do not grasp, nor do the Shravakas, nor do the Pratyekabuddhas, nor do the Bodhisattvas, therefore children are those who have attained dharani. What is the reason for this? Thus, children grasp at what is not well grasped, but the Buddhas do not grasp, nor do the Shravakas, nor do the Pratyekabuddhas, nor do the Bodhisattvas.
