Having five storehouses and nine openings, possessing seven locations, completely filled with impurities. A handful of brain marrow, a handful of fat, three handfuls of oil, six handfuls of phlegm, six handfuls of bile, completely driven by wind, a barrel of blood, and a jar of vomit. All of these are completely filled separately like warehouses with partitions. Completely surrounded by seven layers of skin, nourished by six tastes, burning vomit with the fire of the body, constantly dripping outwards. All these limbs of the body are unpleasant to look at, have a foul odor, and are of the nature of pus. Who would pay homage to it? Because it is merely a vessel that exists only for a moment's need, and like a vehicle for bearing burdens, it should be understood with the wisdom of the Dharma. To this, it is said: To this impure mass of a body, who would be arrogant about its form and pay homage? That is like a foolish person walking around carrying a jar of vomit. Pus drips from its nose, foul odors constantly emanate from its mouth, dust accumulates in its eyes, and it is infested with worms. Who would be attached to it and pay homage? For example, a child holding charcoal trembles, saying, "I will make this white." But it will not become white; it will only be exhausted. Foolish people have inverted arrogance. Similarly, those with impure thoughts, thinking, "I will make this body clean," even if they smear, wipe, and bathe on a hundred platforms, will be exhausted by the power of the Lord of Death and will not become clean. Then, the Bhagavan again spoke to the householder Daya Jin and the five hundred householders: Householders, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who wish to attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment should examine the body in forty-four ways. What are these forty-four ways? Like this, householders, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should observe the body as being repulsive and inherently discordant, and should denigrate it. Bodhisattvas should observe the body as oozing pus and having a foul odor. Bodhisattvas should observe the body as ultimately decaying and being insubstantial.

One should contemplate the absence of self. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as a connection of sinews and veins, and as fragile. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as an impure discharge, and as impure. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as not real, like an illusion. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as causing confusion to unwise ordinary people. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as decaying and leaking from the nine orifices. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as becoming a single flame by the fire of ignorance. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as being blinded by desire, hatred, and ignorance. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as being covered by the net of desire and entangled in the net of craving. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as being completely filled with orifices, as a place of orifices. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as being tormented by four hundred and four diseases. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as the abode of eighty-four thousand kinds of worms. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as being of the nature of death, and therefore impermanent. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as being ignorant of the Dharma, and therefore inanimate. The Bodhisattva contemplates the body as gradually forming and ultimately decaying, like a vase.
