The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Asked by the Noble Householder Shri Datta" The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Asked by the Noble Householder Shri Datta" The twenty-eighth chapter of the Great Collection of Jewels, the Hundred Thousand Chapter of Dharma Categories, namely, Asked by the Householder Dattashri. One fascicle. In Sanskrit: Arya Piradatta Grihapati Pariprccha Nama Mahayana Sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Great Vehicle Called "Asked by the Noble Householder Dattashri". Homage to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One was in Shravasti, in the garden of Prince Jeta, in the grove of Anathapindika. Together with a great Sangha of twelve hundred and fifty bhikshus, all of whom were arhats, with outflows exhausted, without defilements, endowed with power, their minds thoroughly liberated, their wisdom thoroughly liberated, knowers, great elephants, having done what was to be done, having accomplished what was to be accomplished, having cast off their burdens, having attained their own benefit, having completely exhausted the bonds of existence, their minds thoroughly liberated by correct knowledge, having reached the far shore of all mastery of the mind, possessing supernormal knowledge, all possessing supernormal knowledge, except for one person, namely, the venerable Ananda. All five hundred Bodhisattvas also had obtained dharanis, had obtained samadhi, and were abiding in the same method. At that time, in the great city of Shravasti, there lived a wealthy householder named Dattashri, who was rich, possessed great wealth, had many possessions, had much wealth and possessions, had many collections of wealth, grain, storehouses, and granaries, had many elephants, horses, mules, sheep, goats, and cattle, had many male servants, female servants, laborers, and wage earners, had much lapis lazuli, gold, jewels, pearls, vaidurya, conch shells, agate, coral, red pearls, and silver. He was gathered together with about five hundred householders. When they were gathered together, they spoke of such topics as: Friends, it is difficult to encounter the arising of a Buddha. It is difficult to obtain a human birth.

It is difficult! It is difficult to obtain leisure and endowment. It is difficult to have faith in the teachings of the Tathagata. It is difficult to become ordained. It is difficult to obtain the state of a Bhikshu. It is difficult to practice diligently. Those beings who are grateful and understand their actions, and who do not disregard even small deeds, let alone large ones, are extremely rare. Even more rare are those beings who have faith in the teachings of the Tathagata. Even more rare are those beings who, having faith in the teachings of the Tathagata, practice diligently. Even more rare are those beings who find joy in the teachings of the Tathagata. It is difficult to be liberated from Samsara. Should we completely pass into Nirvana through the Hearer Vehicle? Or through the Buddha Vehicle? Or should we completely pass into Nirvana through the unsurpassed Great Vehicle? Having gathered together in agreement, all of them developed such discernment: It is best that we completely pass into Nirvana through the unsurpassed Great Vehicle, not through the Hearer Vehicle, nor through the Solitary Realizer Vehicle. Then, the householder Datta, surrounded and attended by about five hundred householders, together came forth from the great city of Shravasti, and went to the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, the Anathapindika's Garden, and where the Blessed One was. Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, circumambulated the Blessed One three times, and then sat down on one side. Then, the Blessed One, knowing full well, spoke to the householder Datta and the approximately five hundred householders: Householders, for what reason have you come to the presence of the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One? Then, the householder Datta and the approximately five hundred householders rose from their seats, arranged their upper garments over one shoulder, knelt on their right knees, and, with their palms joined together, bowed towards the Blessed One and said this to the Blessed One: Blessed One, once upon a time, we, approximately five hundred householders, gathered together...
