The four noble truths are fully understood. When those teachings are heard, held, increased, and fully contemplated, dependent origination is fully understood. That is to say, with ignorance as a condition, actions arise; with actions as a condition, consciousness arises; with consciousness as a condition, name and form arise; with name and form as a condition, the six sense sources arise; with the six sense sources as a condition, contact arises; with contact as a condition, feeling arises; with feeling as a condition, craving arises; with craving as a condition, grasping arises; with grasping as a condition, becoming arises; with becoming as a condition, birth arises; with birth as a condition, aging and death arise. This is called dependent origination. Whatever does not know or see the four noble truths and dependent origination is called ignorance. Whatever slight actions of body, speech, and mind tend towards merit, or tend towards non-merit, or tend towards immovability, or tend towards the desire realm, or tend towards the form realm, or tend towards the formless realm, those should be known as actions. Whatever slight mind that arises from that, which is called mind, that is called consciousness. Whatever arises from that, whether it is feeling, perception, thought, contact, or attention, that is called name. Whatever arises together, whether it is gross form, imagined form, or discernible form, that is called form. Those two should be known as name and form. What arises from that, the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, that is called the six sense sources. Relying on the eye and also relying on form, the consciousness of the eye arises, and the combination of the three is contact. Relying on the ear, nose, tongue, body, mind, and phenomena, the consciousness of the mind arises, and the combination of the three is contact, that is contact. What arises from that, whether it is pleasant feeling, painful feeling, or neither painful nor pleasant feeling, those are called the three feelings. What arises from that, desire and attachment.

Joy is called craving. What arises from that is universal attachment, as well as views, precepts and asceticism, and the assertion of self, which is called grasping. What arises from that is form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, which is existence. Whatever exists is arising, birth, and manifestation, which is called birth. Whatever exists is change, destruction, and approaching, which is called aging. Whatever exists is death, transference, and separation, which is called death. Thus, when contemplating, fully understanding, and comprehending dependent arising, one does not generate pride in the earth. One does not generate pride through the earth. One does not generate pride thinking the earth is 'mine.' One does not generate intense joy in the earth. One does not generate pride in water, fire, wind, space, consciousness, as well as oneness, otherness, seeing, hearing, discrimination, consciousness, and nirvana. One does not generate pride through nirvana. One does not generate pride thinking nirvana is 'mine.' One does not generate intense joy in nirvana. When one correctly sees the phenomena of dependent arising, one comprehends and establishes the three doors of liberation: the emptiness of phenomena, signlessness, and wishlessness. When one correctly sees the phenomena of dependent arising, it is like this: with the cessation of ignorance, formations cease. With the cessation of formations, consciousness ceases. With the cessation of consciousness, name and form cease. With the cessation of name and form, the six sense bases cease. With the cessation of the six sense bases, contact ceases. With the cessation of contact, feeling ceases. With the cessation of feeling, craving ceases. With the cessation of craving, grasping ceases. With the cessation of grasping, existence ceases. With the cessation of existence, birth ceases. With the cessation of birth, aging and death cease, thus comprehending and establishing the cessation of dependent arising. Thus, even when one correctly sees the cessation of dependent arising, one does not make the cessation of dependent arising manifest, because like that.
