Like the earth, it is equal and unchanging, neither arrogant nor humble. Towards beautiful and ugly things, there is neither agreement nor disagreement. Towards sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, and pleasant and unpleasant things, there is neither agreement nor disagreement. Those desires are aroused by one's own mind, and their taste is experienced through distorted and erroneous discriminations, therefore, they should be regarded as like skeletons. Desires are the source of many enemies, therefore, they should be regarded as like pieces of flesh. Desires are painful when acquired and pleasant when abandoned, therefore, they should be regarded as like grass fires. Desires are full of harm, therefore, they should be regarded as like fruits on the top of a tree. Desires are not something that can be controlled, therefore, they should be regarded as like begging. Desires are only a momentary joy born of error, therefore, they should be regarded as like dreams. Desires are born from the inverted perception of regarding suffering as pleasure, therefore, they should be regarded as like leprosy. Desires are the basis of all misdeeds, the cause of falling into the lower realms, and the end of the hells for sentient beings, therefore, they should be regarded as like spit. Desires are insatiable and increase thirst, therefore, they should be regarded as like salt water. Therefore, being separated from these desires, separated from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing thought and examination, one dwells, having perfected the first dhyana, which is born of separation and is accompanied by joy and pleasure. Then, having abandoned thought and examination, with the illness completely subsided, the continuum of mind becomes one-pointed, without thought, without examination, one dwells, having perfected the second dhyana, which is born of samadhi and is accompanied by joy and pleasure. Then, being free from attachment to joy, one abides in equanimity, possessing mindfulness and awareness; the noble ones say of the pleasure experienced by the body, 'One abides in pleasure with mindfulness, this is equanimity,' one dwells, having perfected the third dhyana. Then, having abandoned pleasure, and having previously abandoned suffering, with both joy and displeasure having ceased, it is neither pleasure nor suffering.
