Those who are seen by direct perception will be reproached, not abiding in practice will cause regret in the mind, not abandoning doubt will cause extreme instability, emphasizing words will cause the loss of hearing and discriminating wisdom, being an object of consciousness will cause attachment to desirable qualities, not contemplating reality as it is will quickly abandon the Dharma, creating other things will become unstable and without support, the mind not being completely subdued will not receive respect, not understanding the realm of Dharma will cause dependence on others, not completely knowing the senses will cause control by afflictions. Maitreya, these twenty faults are the faults of Bodhisattvas who delight in speaking, emphasize words, and are separated from contemplating meaning. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Being arrogant after hearing the Dharma, one will not be respectful, attached to discriminating speech, becoming forgetful and losing mindfulness, these are the faults of delighting in speech. Far from the inner feeling, body and mind also become unskilled in taming, becoming proud and arrogant, these are the faults of delighting in speech. Children's contemplation of the excellent Dharma completely diminishes, the mind becomes inflexible and very rough, far from tranquility and insight, these are the faults of delighting in speech. Always without respect for the gurus, but delighting in idle talk, abiding in meaningless things and wisdom diminishes, these are the faults of delighting in speech. Not being respected by the assembly of gods, at that time desire will not arise for them, the individual body of right view diminishes, these are the faults of delighting in speech. Those whose bodies have many obvious faults will be reproached by these wise ones, their lives become meaningless, these are the faults of delighting in speech. My practice has declined, what should I do? At the time of death, children will feel sad, not understanding the deep meaning and feeling very painful, these are the faults of delighting in speech. Moving and swaying like a blade of grass, that is how it is.

Surely it will turn into hesitation. That will never be steadfast, these are the faults of being fond of talking. Like sitting in the midst of watching a dance, praising the merits of other heroes, yourself will become negligent, these are the faults of being fond of talking. His mind is completely attached to ear consciousness, nourished by sound, wisdom declines. He will think wrongly and go on the wrong path, these are the faults of being fond of talking. He will become cunning, frivolous, and despairing, again and again trying to scatter the fields, far away from the holy Dharma of the noble ones, these are the faults of being fond of talking. Weak in power, he will become complacent with vanity, the ignorant will become cunning and changeable, like a monkey, his mind will become agitated, these are the faults of being fond of talking. Because his own intelligence is inferior, the ignorant one relies on others, he will be controlled by afflictions, these are the faults of being fond of talking. The eyes will be deluded, and so will the ears, the nose will be deluded, and so will the tongue, the body will be deluded, and the mind will be deluded, these are the faults of being fond of talking. Because of being fond of talking for a long time, he cannot obtain his own purity. Rather than obtaining endless pleasant words, even thinking of just one word is best. The sugarcane peel has no essence, the taste of what is liked is in the disease. By eating the peel, one cannot obtain the sweet taste of sugarcane. Just like the peel, so is talking, the taste is like thinking about the meaning. Therefore, abandon being fond of talking, always be mindful and contemplate the meaning. If you realize these faults of talking, and understand these supreme qualities of meaning, then, whoever here is a Bodhi-wise one, should be fond of contemplating the meaning. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Maitreya addressed the Bhagavan thus: Bhagavan, the faults of being fond of talking like this, and the merits of contemplating the meaning, have been well spoken by the Tathagata, it is truly wonderful! Bhagavan, the Bodhisattvas who seek the essence, abandoning the contemplation of meaning, and
