For example, just as a merchant or householder is, so should a Bodhisattva be regarded. Maitreya, just as an only son is, so should a Bodhisattva generate the thought of all beings as being like an only son. Maitreya, just as a merchant or householder, not for other reasons, nor for other purposes, but for the sake of that only son, would enter a prison, similarly, Maitreya, a Bodhisattva should not enter homes for the sake of Dharma robes or alms, but should enter homes for the sake of completely liberating those beings from samsara. Maitreya, also in the future, in the last five hundred years of the later age, there will appear some monks who have not cultivated the body, have not cultivated the mind, have not cultivated discipline, and have not cultivated wisdom. Those people, for the sake of Dharma robes and alms, will enter homes with gifts of flowers, gifts of fruits, gifts of leaves, gifts of utensils, and gifts of repayment for deeds done. Therefore, Maitreya, a monk should not be like a garland of flowers, nor should he be like a servant or worker. Maitreya, a monk who wishes to enter homes should not send other gifts except for entering with the gift of Dharma. He should be learned, deeply engaged in the scriptures, fearless, without greed, without hypocrisy, without flattery, without possessiveness, and having generated joy in the Dharma, then he should enter homes. Having entered homes, he should proclaim the virtues of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, as well as the virtues of generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. Apart from speaking about the Dharma, he should not speak about matters of houses, or matters of fields, or matters of gain, or matters of pleasant sensations, or matters of kings, or matters of thieves, or matters of villages, or matters of cities, or matters of regions, or matters of sons.

Or, a daughter's talk, or, other gifts should not be made. Maitreya, if someone were to completely fill this world, the three-thousand great thousand world system, with the seven precious things, and give it to a son or daughter of good family, and were to gather all the implements of happiness of the sentient beings belonging to the three-thousand great thousand world system, and give them to that son or daughter of good family, then, with just that much wealth and those implements of happiness, he would not be showing affection or benefiting that son or daughter of good family. But, if they were allowed to hear just one four-line verse, and that verse only appeared and was heard in their ear consciousness, even if faith was not immediately obtained, that would cause that son or daughter of good family to increase, benefit, and show affection, and to increase very greatly. Maitreya, look at those monks who, having entered various families, abandon the Buddha's teachings, approach worldly talk, and how much they appear diligent in that family with great meaninglessness. Why is that? Maitreya, now, with gold, silver, jewels, gems, pearls, lapis lazuli, conch shells, agate, coral, or implements of happiness, sentient beings who are subject to birth will not be completely liberated from birth. Sentient beings who are subject to sickness will also not be completely liberated from diseases. Sentient beings who are subject to aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil will also not be completely liberated from aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil. But, hearing the Dharma will cause sentient beings who are subject to birth to be completely liberated from birth, and sentient beings who are subject to sickness to be completely liberated from sickness. Sentient beings who are subject to aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil will also be completely liberated from turmoil.

This is for the sake of translation. Understanding this, the Thus-Gone One said: Filling the great trichiliocosm with pure gold and giving it away, is not as beneficial as uttering a single four-line verse. Whoever wishes to benefit others, giving all the happiness of all beings in the three realms to one being, is not as beneficial as proclaiming a single four-line verse of the Buddha's teachings to that being. That is the supreme benefit, as it liberates them from suffering. Maitreya, Bodhisattva! Filling endless and limitless world realms with the seven precious jewels and offering them to the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is not as beneficial as generating great compassion and proclaiming a single four-line verse to one sentient being. That will generate even more merit. It is said: If someone fills worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with supreme jewels and offers them to the Victorious Ones with great joy, and someone gives a single verse to one sentient being, the gift of jewels is indeed vast, but the gift of a verse accomplished with compassion is so much greater that it cannot be compared, not even by hundreds, thousands, or millions. Then, the Bhagavat again spoke to the Bodhisattva, the great being Maitreya: Maitreya, in the center of the right hand of the Thus-Gone One, there is a manifest radiance called "Adorned with the Cause of Accomplishing All Merit." When the Thus-Gone One arises, he extends his right hand and covers this entire trichiliocosm, providing all beings with all the means of happiness. He provides food for those who desire food, drink for those who desire drink, clothes for those who desire clothes, jewels for those who desire jewels, and whatever they desire. However, that alone does not liberate those beings from the great suffering of the crocodile-jawed ocean of samsara, which has no beginning or end.
