For what reason is that? World Honored One, like this, let alone other subsequent things for that, it is for cherishing oneself. The World Honored One said: Maitreya, if all sentient beings were to possess such great diligence, then the great diligence of all those sentient beings would not even come close to one hundredth of the great diligence of a Bodhisattva, not one thousandth, not one hundred thousandth, not one millionth, not one hundred millionth, not one billionth, not one trillionth, not even close in terms of analogy and cause. What is the reason for that? Maitreya, like this, a Bodhisattva is one who turns all sentient beings who are driven towards the direction of samsara away from samsara, unmoving, and establishes them in the realm of nirvana. Maitreya, for example, if a person were born with such strength, such vigor, such power, and such diligence, and he were to take all the masses of water in the four great oceans, and from whichever great river's stream they entered the great ocean, he would turn the end of the water back from that great river's stream, and only for the sake of turning away from the cycle of existence, he would pour it into the Anavatapta lake. Maitreya, what do you think? Is that person doing something difficult, or is it very rare, or is it very diligent? Maitreya replied: World Honored One, that is so. Sugata, that is so. The World Honored One said: Maitreya, you should believe, you should understand, even more than that, those who, with a superior intention, generate great compassion for the sake of all sentient beings, and generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and diligently adorn themselves, they are doing something extremely difficult and are very rare. Even more than that, those who are certain that there is a Buddha, there is Dharma, there is Sangha, and that the fruits of well-done and ill-done actions ripen.

Those are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who eliminate the arising mind of desire, eliminate the arising mind of hatred, and eliminate the arising mind of ignorance are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who disregard friends, advisors, relatives, and elders, abandon small enjoyments and great collections of enjoyments, and with the mind of renunciation, take seven steps from the household life into the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who wear saffron robes and, with faith in the well-spoken Dharma and Vinaya, renounce from home to homelessness, are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who, having thus renounced, diligently adorn themselves with instructions and study the established precepts, are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who regard worldly talk as fearful and, desiring solitude, turn towards solitary places and take seven steps, are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who believe that all phenomena are empty are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who obtain the acceptance that accords with the profound Dharma are extremely difficult and amazing. Even more so, those who directly realize the three doors of liberation and successively attain the fruits from stream-enterer to arhat are extremely difficult and amazing. Why is that? Maitreya, for example, to generate faith and joy in the noble Dharma and Vinaya, to renounce and take full ordination, to obtain the status and fruit of a bhikshu, that is extremely difficult. Maitreya, even in the future life, in the last five hundred years of the degenerate age,

When the time comes for the Dharma to decline, when the teachings of the Bodhisattva Vehicle are well spoken, some will renounce this Vinaya, abandoning the deeds of a Bodhisattva and dwelling in the deeds of children. Maitreya, what are the deeds of the Bodhisattvas? These twenty are the deeds of the Bodhisattvas. If these are not perfected, a Bodhisattva cannot go to the essence of Bodhi. What are the twenty? One should cut off the mind of stinginess, one should increase great giving, one should completely abandon immoral conduct, one should perfect the aggregate of morality, one should completely abandon the faults of harmful intent and contention, one should abide in the power of patience, one should completely suppress the mind of laziness, one should undertake great diligence, one should completely abandon the mind of forgetfulness, one should meditate without relying on mindfulness and wisdom, one should cultivate patience towards the profound, one should thoroughly realize the Prajnaparamita, one should abandon all discriminations, one should abide in the signless, one should be free from aspirations, one should perfect the realm of no aspiration, one should not abandon all sentient beings, one should abide in great compassion, one should not bring to mind the joyful mind of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, one should have faith in the wisdom of the Buddha, without hesitation and with conviction. Maitreya, these twenty are the deeds of the Bodhisattvas. If these deeds are not perfected, a Bodhisattva cannot go to the essence of Bodhi. Maitreya, these four are the true vows of the Bodhisattvas. What are the four? Abandoning one's own happiness, not knowing satisfaction with the Dharma, through completely seeking the Dharma, I shall become a Buddha. I shall turn the wheel of Dharma. I shall liberate beings from beginningless and endless samsara. I shall lead the immeasurable realms of beings to enter into the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment.
