If one desires something, if one desires complete Nirvana, that too is desiring sin. The Tathagata, considering this, tells the monks, even if I am in Nirvana with the residue of aggregates, I do not praise even a moment of birth. Kashyapa, these four are the defilements of a Shramana, and renunciants should not do any of these things at all. What are the four? Attachment to the world, attachment to persons, transgressing the precepts, and wanting to see the future Buddha. These four are the defilements of a Shramana, and renunciants should not do any of these things at all. Kashyapa, for the sake of those Shramanas and Brahmins who live completely pure lives, have no sinful desires, possess discipline, are upright, without deception, without hypocrisy, without arrogance, and desire complete Nirvana, I have attained the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Therefore, Kashyapa, those inspiring things should be spoken, and upon hearing them, yogis who practice yoga will be delighted and satisfied. Kashyapa, if any son or daughter of good family were to honor, respect, revere, and make offerings to all sentient beings in the four great continents of the world with all the means of happiness for a kalpa or more, it would be better than if someone who has truly entered the path, whose discipline is completely pure, and whose livelihood is completely pure, were to receive even a water-vessel's worth of what is given by the faith of any donor, that person would accumulate a much greater mass of merit. But honoring, respecting, revering, and making offerings to all sentient beings in the four great continents of the world with all the means of happiness for a kalpa or more is not like that. Kashyapa, just as a foolish person full of sinful desires completely destroys the benefit of the one from whom he enjoys robes or food, that person is like an enemy, an executioner, and...

Cannot be completely destroyed by ignorance or enemy forces. These four Light-holders are the subtle afflictions of renunciates. If a renunciate possesses these subtle afflictions, it is said that they will go to hell like an arrow shot. What are the four? Being jealous of others' gains; upon hearing sutras about upholding vows, finding fault with the precepts; transgressing the teachings or precepts of the Tathagata, concealing it with arrogance, not confessing, not admitting it; knowingly enjoying offerings given in faith. These four Light-holders are the subtle afflictions of renunciates. If a renunciate possesses these subtle afflictions, it is said that they will go to hell like an arrow shot. These four Light-holders are those who pretend to be monks. What are the four? Corrupted morality, holding to self-view, abandoning the sacred Dharma, and being worldly. These four are those who pretend to be monks. These four Light-holders are the pride and carelessness of renunciates. If a renunciate possesses these pride and carelessness, it is said that they will go to hell. What are the four? Being arrogant due to extensive learning, and becoming careless due to extensive learning; being arrogant due to gains, respect, and praise, and becoming careless due to being overwhelmed by gains, respect, and praise; being arrogant due to friendly homes and homes that give alms, and becoming careless due to being puffed up by friendly homes and homes that give alms; being arrogant due to cultivated qualities and reduced possessions, and praising oneself and disparaging others due to cultivated qualities and reduced possessions, which is called carelessness. These four Light-holders are the pride and carelessness of renunciates. If a renunciate possesses these pride and carelessness,

If possessed, it should be said that beings will fall into hell. Then, the Venerable Mahakashyapa said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, in the future, in the last five hundred years of the future age, those who pretend to be renunciates, wearing robes, will cause the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, which the Tathagata has diligently cultivated for countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas, to disappear. What kind of situations will arise? After this was reported, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Mahakashyapa: Kashyapa, what is the use of you repeatedly asking the Tathagata these words? Why? Kashyapa, if the Tathagata were to speak of the sins of those foolish people, and their clinging to non-righteousness, and their deception, theft, perversion, the faults of Mara, and all the true faults of Mara's blessings, Kashyapa, even if you were to hear all the sins committed by those non-noble beings, they would not appear as true. Then, the Venerable Mahakashyapa said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, I beseech the Blessed One to bless the Dharma and Vinaya of the Tathagata so that it may abide in the world for a long time. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Mahakashyapa: Kashyapa, the Tathagata will soon pass into Nirvana. Kashyapa reported: Blessed One, in order to universally protect the Dharma, I beseech the Blessed One, the Tathagata, to remain in the world for a kalpa or more than a kalpa. After this was reported, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Mahakashyapa: Kashyapa, even if a thousand Buddhas were to teach the Dharma with miracles to those foolish people, those non-noble beings who crave sin and cling to sin would not return or turn away from those sins. Kashyapa, moreover, in the last five hundred years of the future age, you...
