For everything, there is no easy cutting off, and there is always an opportunity. To dwell in a house is to dwell in the midst of afflictions. If you wish, I will instruct and guide you, and you should practice as I have instructed and guided you. Then, the Blessed One opened the opportunity for ordination, and King Excellent Virtue said to those thousand sons: "Who among you is willing to rule the kingdom and lead sentient beings to embrace the true Dharma?" They all said: "Father, we also, out of faith, will renounce the household and go forth from home to homelessness. Please do not abandon us." The king said: "If all of you were to become ordained, then all the beings in all the realms of the four continents would be exhausted. Whoever among you develops great and steadfast compassion for sentient beings, let him rule the kingdom and lead sentient beings to embrace the true Dharma." Then, among those young princes, the young prince named Great Compassionate Mind spoke this verse to his father and those elders: "The Tathagatas have said that ordination accumulates many virtues, but even so, because of compassion, I will rule the kingdom for the benefit of beings. As long as I live, I will practice celibacy and observe the eight precepts of the upavasatha. I will not partake of flowers, fragrances, perfumes, or wine. I will not wear any ornaments on my body, nor wear shoes, nor a precious headdress. I will not sleep on a bed with golden legs, nor wear royal garments. I will not delight in the sounds of cymbals and songs, nor even in the sounds of peacocks and swans. I will avoid the flattery of people and the dwellings of women, and sleep alone, without fanning myself. I will go from continent to continent, and extensively explain the ten virtues. I will reveal the faults of dwelling in a house, and I will also praise the virtues of ordination. I will not be arrogant because of appearance, wealth, or power, and I will not transgress against the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. I will generate the mind of enlightenment."

I will not do harm, and will always act in accordance with the three realms of existence. With generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accordance with the Dharma, I will diligently gather beings. In this supreme Great Vehicle Dharma, I will fully ripen many billions of beings. For the sake of hearing and teaching the Dharma, three times during the day and three times during the night, I will draw near to the Tathagata, who is like Mount Sumeru, and also make offerings to the Tathagata. Then, the Bhagavan Tathagata, like Mount Sumeru, praised the young prince Great Compassion, saying, "Well done! Well done! Noble son! With the merit of taking the eight precepts, even a bodhisattva who is a householder is equal in merit to one who has renounced. With your great compassion, you will also accomplish the merit of renunciation." After that, King Good Deed placed the young prince Great Compassion on the throne, and together with his sons, who were not yet one thousand in number, they renounced their homes and went forth into homelessness with faith in the teachings of the Bhagavan. After they had renounced, the Tathagata taught and instructed them in accordance with the miracles he had shown, and before long they had generated the five superknowledges. They also generated the wisdom of retention, mindfulness, and hearing the Dharma. The young prince Great Compassion, after being empowered to the throne, also taught in accordance with the four great continents in the month called Shining Star, so that nine hundred million beings and two hundred million beings would generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, and in this way he taught the Dharma to sentient beings. All of them also renounced their homes and went forth into homelessness with faith in the teachings of the Bhagavan Tathagata, like Mount Sumeru, and through this Great Vehicle, they all became non-returning from unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. Sharadvatiputra! Thus, they generated roots of virtue, and became the support of sentient beings who had been purified, and generated faith.

Look at that scripture which has become words. Sharadvatiputra, do you doubt and waver, thinking that the Chakravartin king named Good Arranger in that time was someone else? Sharadvatiputra, you should not see it that way. This son of the gods, the leader, was the Chakravartin king named Good Arranger in that time. Sharadvatiputra, do you doubt and waver, thinking that the Dharma-speaking bhikshu named Dharma Banner in that time was someone else? Sharadvatiputra, you should not see it that way. This Manjushri, who has become a youth, was the Dharma-speaking bhikshu named Dharma Banner in that time. Sharadvatiputra, do you doubt and waver, thinking that the thousand sons of King Good Arranger in that time were someone else? Sharadvatiputra, you should not see it that way. These thousand Buddhas of this Fortunate Aeon were the thousand sons of King Good Arranger in that time. Sharadvatiputra, do you doubt and waver, thinking that the prince named Great Compassionate Mind in that time was someone else? Sharadvatiputra, you should not see it that way. I myself was the young prince named Great Compassionate Mind in that time. Sharadvatiputra, in this way, the mindful Bodhisattvas of the past, through superior intention and the practice of awareness, will certainly attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. When the Bhagavan spoke this speech endowed with the way of the past, thirty-two thousand beings from among the gods and humans generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said this to Manjushri, who had become a youth: Manjushri, you and this son of the gods, the leader, have practiced pure conduct together for a long time, have paid homage to many Buddhas, and have accumulated roots of virtue.
