Therefore, a householder abiding in his home, without succumbing to attachment and anger, should attain equanimity towards the eight worldly dharmas. Whether he gains enjoyment, a wife, wealth, or grain, he should not be arrogant or joyful. Even if he does not attain everything, he should not be discouraged or weary. He should examine thus: all conditioned phenomena are like illusions, their nature is to abide separately through cultivation. For example, father, son, wife, female servant, employee, wage earner, friend, minister, relative, and in-law—these are all accomplished by the ripening of karma, but they are not mine, nor am I theirs. Why is that? Because parents and so forth are not my protectors, saviors, relatives, abodes, islands, selves, or belongings. The aggregates, elements, and sense bases that I grasp are also not me, not mine. If they are not mine, how can my parents and so on become me and mine? And how can I be theirs? Needless to say. Why is that? Because I am also owned by karma, experiencing the fruits of karma. Whether it is good or bad karma, whatever one does, one will experience the corresponding fruits. One will individually experience that fruit, experiencing that maturation. These are also owned by karma, experiencing the fruits of karma. Whether it is good or bad karma, whatever one does, one will experience the corresponding fruits. One will individually experience that fruit. Therefore, I should not engage in unwholesome actions, because these are not my part. These are to be possessed for the happiness of this life, not for the happiness of future lives. I should engage in what belongs to me, such as: generosity, taming, proper restraint, patience, determination, diligence, mindfulness, and the accumulation and manifestation of virtuous qualities that are limbs of enlightenment—these are mine, and wherever I go, these will accompany me.

will also go, thinking. For the sake of that life, or for the sake of sons and wives, one should not accumulate obvious sinful deeds. A householder Bodhisattva, a householder living at home, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? The perception of impermanence and the perception of instability. A householder Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate these three perceptions towards his wife. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? 'This is a friend for joy and play, but not a friend for the next world.' 'This is a companion for eating and drinking, but not a companion for experiencing the ripening of karma.' 'This is a friend for happiness, but not a friend for suffering,' thinking thus. A householder Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate these three perceptions towards his wife. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? Perceiving her as impure, perceiving her as foul-smelling, and perceiving her as decaying. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? Perceiving her as a flesh-eating ogress, perceiving her as a demoness, and perceiving her as having an ugly form. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? Perceiving her as full, perceiving her as deep, and perceiving her as ungrateful. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? Perceiving her as a being who will go to hell, perceiving her as a being who will go to the animal realm, and perceiving her as a being who will go to the world of Yama. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva, a householder, should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? Perceiving her as a being who will go to hell, perceiving her as a being who will go to the animal realm, and perceiving her as a being who will go to the world of Yama. Householder.
