The brave householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as a swamp, to perceive her as attachment, and to perceive her as emptiness. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as a rope, to perceive her as being bound, and to perceive her as a snare. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as a spark, to perceive her as a grass-fire lamp, and to perceive her as a water knife. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as meaningless, to perceive her as thorns, and to perceive her as poison. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as excessively adding on, to perceive her as excessively causing universal defilement, and to perceive her as excessively clinging. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as a farmer plowing, to perceive her as cutting off, and to perceive her as holding weapons. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as contention, to perceive her as argument, and to perceive her as a granary. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should generate three perceptions towards his wife. What are the three? To perceive her as encountering the unpleasant, to perceive her as separating from the pleasant, and to perceive her as fear. In brief, to perceive her as the dirt of the kitchen, to perceive her as all the filth of the kitchen, to perceive her as the cause of all harm, and to generate the perception of her as the root of all non-virtue. Householder, a Bodhisattva householder, residing in the home, should examine his wife by attending to these perceptions in his mind. Householder, furthermore, a Bodhisattva householder should not generate excessive affection for his son.

If a householder develops particularly strong affection for his son, but not for other sentient beings in the same way, then he should apply three rebukes to his own mind: Bodhicitta is that of a Bodhisattva with an equanimous mind, not one with an inequanimous mind; Bodhicitta is that of a Bodhisattva who practices correctly, not one who practices wrongly; Bodhicitta is that of a Bodhisattva who acts without differentiation, not one who acts with differentiation. Having rebuked his own mind with these three rebukes, he should generate the perception of non-attachment towards that son. This is non-attachment: not being cherished in my heart. Because I cultivate particularly strong affection for that son for his sake, but not for other sentient beings in the same way, this contradicts the teachings spoken by the Buddha. Therefore, I have also harmed the roots of virtue, and even recklessly caused harm to life, which is harmful to myself. Therefore, I have gone on a path that is not in accordance with the path of Bodhi, which is a reversal for myself. He should generate these three perceptions. By making that son the cause, just as he has affection for that son, he should generate loving-kindness towards all sentient beings; just as he cherishes himself, he should generate loving-kindness. In that way, he should generate the mind. He should also think like this: This one has come from elsewhere, and I too have come from elsewhere, but all sentient beings have been my sons in the past, and I too have been the son of all sentient beings. Therefore, there is no sentient being here that is "mine," "another's," or "whose." He should contemplate properly. Why is that? Because of impermanence. In the five realms of existence, even friendship can turn into animosity, so I should act in such a way that I do not become friendly or unfriendly with anyone. Why is that? Because if one clings to animosity, one will not want to do everything for everyone; if one clings to friendship, one will want to do it very much. Because with the two minds of attachment and anger, one cannot comprehend the equality of Dharma. Why is that? Because acting unequally is huma
