will be completely fulfilled. Householder, in this way, a diligent Bodhisattva, dwelling in solitude, can completely perfect the practice of the six perfections with minimal effort. Householder, a diligent Bodhisattva is permitted to dwell in solitude if he possesses four qualities. What are the four? Householder, here, a diligent Bodhisattva is one who has heard much, retains what he has heard, is skilled in discerning the meaning of the Dharma, is diligent in proper reflection, and practices in accordance with the Dharma; thus, he should dwell in solitude. Householder, furthermore, if a diligent Bodhisattva has strong afflictions, he should dwell alone in solitude in order to pacify these afflictions, so that he may subdue them. Householder, furthermore, if a diligent Bodhisattva has attained the five superknowledges, he should dwell in solitude in order to fully ripen gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, and other beings. Householder, furthermore, if a diligent Bodhisattva knows that the Buddha has permitted dwelling in solitude, he should dwell in solitude, where all virtuous qualities will be completely fulfilled. Having established a firm foundation of virtue, he should then enter villages, cities, towns, regions, countries, and royal palaces to teach the Dharma. Householder, a diligent Bodhisattva is permitted to dwell in solitude if he possesses these four qualities. Householder, if a diligent Bodhisattva enters a community for the sake of recitation and chanting, he should be respectful there, showing reverence to the preceptors, abbots, elders, those in the middle ranks, and newly ordained monks, and conduct himself wisely. He should be diligent in his own affairs and not disturb others. He should not be greedy for offerings. He should think thus: the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, is the worthy recipient of offerings from the world with its gods, its entanglements, its Brahmas, its ascetics, its Brahmins, its generations of gods, humans, and asuras.

Moreover, if one does not consider it one's duty to serve all sentient beings in any way, what need is there to mention those of us who have not been taught but wish to learn? I should serve all sentient beings, and I should not consider accepting any service as my duty; one should think in this way. Why is that? Householder, to be greedy for the service of monks is to waste the joy of merit. Those who gather for this reason will also think: We gather for the sake of service, not for the Dharma. In this way, their own faith will also be wasted. Those who serve them, even if they possess worldly wealth, will not obtain great benefit, nor will they obtain great reward. Even if they go to visit the teacher and the abbot, the teacher and the abbot will observe from their attitude of distrust, thinking, "Even if I give them transmission, recitation, and instruction, it will not be of any help to them." Therefore, one should go with diligence of body and mind, and with a clear mind. For the sake of obtaining transmission and recitation, one should not spare even one's life. Those who desire the Dharma should fulfill the wishes of the teacher and the abbot. For the sake of merit, one should seek wealth, respect, and all verses. Householder, if a Bodhisattva, in order to obtain transmission and recitation, hears from others even a single verse, or a four-line verse that corresponds to generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom, or that corresponds to the accumulations of the Bodhisattva path, and hears, accepts, and holds it, then he should respect that teacher for the sake of the Dharma. If, for as many eons as the names, words, and letters shown by the verse, one serves and attends to that teacher without flattery, and makes offerings with all wealth and respect, householder, even so, one will not be able to perfect the repayment to the teacher, what need is there to mention respect that is not for the sake of the Dharma? Householder, listening, contemplating, and engaging in recitation with faith, his mind
