O! I, being frightened and terrified by such fears, came to the monastery. Living at home, living in hustle and bustle, not washing, not being diligent in yoga, and abiding with inappropriate attention, one cannot be completely liberated from such fears and terrors. All those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who appeared in the past, all of them, having lived in monasteries, were completely liberated from all fears, and thus, they attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, free from fear. All those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who will appear in the future, all of them, having lived in monasteries, will be completely liberated from all fears, and thus, they will attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, free from fear. All those Bodhisattva Mahasattvas of the present time who have attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, all of them, having lived in monasteries, were completely liberated from all fears, and thus, they attained the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, free from fear. Therefore, I too feel fear and terror, and I want to completely transcend all fears, and I want to attain fearlessness, so I should live in a monastery, and I should contemplate this completely. Householder, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva, having renounced, lives in a monastery out of fear and terror, all those slight fears that arise in him are born from clinging to self. They arise from manifest attachment to self, complete grasping of self, the basis of self, craving for self, the consciousness of self, taking closely with speech related to self, the view of self, the place of self, the complete conceptualization of self, and guarding self. If I live in a monastery but have not completely abandoned clinging to self, manifest attachment to self, manifest attachment to self, complete grasping of self, the basis of self, craving for self, the consciousness of self, taking closely with speech related to self, the view of self, the place of self, the complete conceptualization of self, and have not completely abandoned guarding self, then my living in a monastery is meaningless.

It should be taught that if one thinks like this, it will not exist. If one is attached to self, one will not abide in solitude. If one is attached to others, one will also not abide in solitude. If one is manifestly attached to 'self-grasping' and 'mine-grasping,' one will not abide in solitude. If one looks at an object, one will not abide in solitude. If one looks at things perversely, one will not abide in solitude. If one thinks that a householder has passed beyond sorrow, one will not abide in solitude, let alone those who are full of afflictions. A householder abiding in solitude means abiding without relying on all dharmas, abiding without clinging to all dharmas, abiding without attachment to all signs, abiding without relying on all forms, abiding without relying on all sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile objects. Abiding in a place where all dharmas are not contrary to equality. Abiding in a place where the mind is extremely peaceful and purified. Abiding in a place where all fears are abandoned and there is no fear. Abiding in a place where one is freed from all afflictions in various ways and has crossed the river. Abiding in a stable place. Abiding in a place where one is content with little, has few desires, and greatly rejoices in the noble lineages. Abiding in a place where one is easy to satisfy and easy to nourish. For the sake of wisdom, abiding in listening to the Dharma by properly applying oneself. Abiding in liberation by individually contemplating the three doors of liberation: emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. In accordance with dependent origination, abiding in pacifying those who are untamed. Abiding in a place where one is extremely pure and has accomplished one's task. Householder, for example, even if there is grass, trees, shrubs, and forests in a solitary place, one will not be afraid or frightened. Householder, similarly, when a Bodhisattva goes forth and abides in solitude, he should generate the thought that the body is like grass, trees, shrubs, medicine, walls, trees, things that dazzle the eyes, and illusions. One should generate the thought: Who would be afraid of this? Who would be frightened of this? If one is afraid and frightened, it is because one thinks that in this body there is a self, a sentient being, a life, a creator, a nourisher, a person, an individual, something born of power, or something not born of power.
