Through faith in maturation, to see correctly; through the complete cessation of all thoughts and various thoughts, to have correct thought; through teaching the Dharma as believed, to have correct speech; through the complete exhaustion of karma, to have correct karmic boundaries; through the correct destruction of the connection of habitual patterns, to have correct livelihood; through comprehending perfect enlightenment, to have correct effort; through the nature of non-forgetfulness, to have correct mindfulness; through fully attaining the wisdom of omniscience, to have correct samadhi; and to not fear emptiness, to not be daunted by the signless, to not be attached to the wishless, to deliberately hold onto existence with wisdom, to rely on meaning and not on letters, to rely on wisdom and not on consciousness, to rely on the Dharma and not on individuals, to rely on sutras of definitive meaning and not on sutras of provisional meaning, and to not conceptualize the nature of Dharma in the manner of being unborn from the beginning and not decaying—this is called the meaning of a renunciant śrāmaṇa of a householder bodhisattva. A householder bodhisattva who has renounced should engage in much non-association. He should think thus: "I will not confuse sentient beings; I will not generate the root of virtue for one sentient being; I will generate the root of virtue for all sentient beings." Although this is so, what are the four associations of a householder bodhisattva who has renounced that are permitted by the Tathāgata? What are the four? Association for the sake of hearing the Dharma, association for the sake of fully maturing sentient beings, association for the sake of making offerings to and serving the Tathāgata, and association with a mind of omniscience without mixing. These four associations of a householder bodhisattva who has renounced are permitted by the Tathāgata. Householder, therefore, a bodhisattva who has renounced should be liberated from all kinds of associations. Householder, furthermore, when a bodhisattva who has renounced dwells in a solitary place, he should think, "Why have I come to a solitary place?" He should...
