Furthermore, a householder who is faithless, ungrateful, thieving, base, and flattering to the arrogant, even if a minister makes offerings, such tainted offerings are inferior. A householder Bodhisattva should think thus: "It is not proper for me to be content with the essence of giving; I should make the essence of discipline, learning, and pure conduct." When he comes to the monastery, he should prostrate to the image of the Thus-Gone One. After prostrating, he should generate three kinds of attention. What are the three? "I should also become worthy of offerings like this; for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, my body should also be blessed; and how quickly I should attain unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, manifest Buddhahood, perform the deeds of a Buddha, and after the Thus-Gone One passes into complete Nirvana, I should also cause (others) to pass into complete Nirvana." He should learn thus, and strive thus. When he enters the monastery, he should observe which monk is learned, which monk is a Dharma speaker, which monk is a Vinaya holder, which monk is a Matrika holder, which monk is a Bodhisattva Pitaka holder, which monk lives in the wilderness, which monk is an alms seeker, which monk is a sweeper, which monk is of few desires, which monk is content, which monk delights in solitude, which monk is a Yoga practitioner, which monk is a meditator, which monk is of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, which monk is a supervisor, which monk is an attendant, which monk is a manager. He should thus examine all the conduct of the monastic community. Having examined their conduct, he should abide in accordance with reason in order to be in harmony with all. He should show his conduct to others. Why is this? Because the monastery is the secret of the village, and the village is the secret of the monastery. Speech should be extremely restrained. He should guard the secret of the monastery in the village, and should not proclaim the secret of the village in the monastery. If a monk lacks Dharma robes, or lacks a bowl, or lacks medicine for healing.

One should give in such a way that the recipient does not become angry or scolded. Why? Because the common actions of gods and humans are jealousy and stinginess. Therefore, one should be very careful with ordinary people, but not with Arhats. Why? Because faults arise from ordinary people, not from Arhats. Therefore, one should rely on much learning and strive to seek hearing. One should rely on those who speak the Dharma and strive for correct speech. One should rely on those who uphold the Vinaya and strive to subdue faults and afflictions. One should rely on those who keep vows and strive to guard body, speech, and mind. One should rely on those who hold the Bodhisattva Pitaka and strive for the Paramitas and skillful means. One should rely on solitary places and strive for complete solitude. One should rely on alms-gatherers and strive not to be moved by gain and loss, fame and infamy, praise and blame, pleasure and pain. One should rely on those who wear rag robes and strive to be content with Dharma robes and not crave adornment. One should rely on those who desire little and strive for little desire. One should rely on those who are content and strive for contentment. One should rely on complete solitude and strive for complete solitude. One should rely on yoga practitioners and strive for the inner peace and insight of the mind, proper attention, and correct abiding within. One should rely on meditators and strive to eliminate afflictions. One should rely on conduct and strive for the inner peace and insight of the mind, proper attention, and correct abiding within. One should rely on meditators and strive to eliminate afflictions. One should rely on those of the Bodhisattva Vehicle and strive for generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and consistency, the four ways of gathering disciples. One should attend to the master of the hand and strive for how to be happy to give away all possessions. One should rely on attendants and strive to do what should be done. One should rely on the chief.

One should rely on diligence and not be completely discouraged in mind. Householder, the Bodhisattva householder, dwelling in the house, should strive to follow as if guarding. If a monk, not yet truly entered into a state without fault, is gathered by the Dharma robe or by the alms bowl, then that monk will be placed in the correct grasp of unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Why is that? Because by gathering with a person, there is a place to generate the gathering of Dharma. Householder, if a Bodhisattva householder sees a sick renunciate monk, he should heal that sick monk even with his own flesh and blood. Householder, furthermore, the Bodhisattva householder should entertain others with generosity and giving, and after giving, he should not generate a mind of regret. This should also be done before all roots of virtue, and let the mind of enlightenment go first. Householder, in this way, the Bodhisattva householder, abiding in the position of a householder, is actually doing the word of the Thus-Gone Ones, and will not decline from the Dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment, and will not decline at all. There is no fault in this, and it will also especially go to other places. Then, the brave householder and those other householders praised in one voice what the Blessed One had said, and then requested the Blessed One, saying: To the extent that the Blessed One has so well spoken of the faults of dwelling in a house, the vows, the conduct, and the benefits of the virtues of renunciation, it is wonderful! Blessed One, we here, dwelling in a house, have clearly seen as many faults as there are in dwelling in a house, and the immeasurable virtues and benefits of renunciation. Blessed One, please allow us to renounce and be fully ordained in the Dharma-Vinaya well spoken by the Sugata. After they requested in this way, the Blessed One said to those householders: Householders, renunciation is difficult to achieve, and conduct is very difficult to accomplish purely. After they requested in this way, those householders said to the Blessed One:
