Those who are afflicted by birth, old age, sickness, and death, seeing this prison of existence where beings are helpless, use the boat of the supreme, peaceful Dharma to liberate beings from the waters of the ocean of existence. Because there is no other protector or refuge for those wandering in this world of compounded things, I vow to liberate all these beings, therefore I have made the aspiration for supreme enlightenment. The Bodhisattva Dhṛtarāṣṭra should understand these four things as if they were common knowledge. What are the four? Obtaining a good rebirth, which is to encounter the appearance of a Buddha; serving the guru, which is to rely on him with a mind free from attachment; being particularly fond of remote dwelling places, which is not to look to gain and honor; and gaining confidence, which is to have patience with the profound. The Bodhisattva Dhṛtarāṣṭra should understand these four things as if they were common knowledge. For this, this is the nature of things; for that, it should be said thus: The steadfast always dwell in the forest and in Sura. They never seek worldly gain. The wise, without attachment, are always full of confidence, skilled in the profound Dharma, and free from all elaborations. They always respectfully serve the gurus. They act in accordance with what they say. They please many countless Sugatas. They make vast offerings to obtain the wisdom of the Buddhas. They become the leaders of those with great fame. They are the pinnacle among gods and humans. They always lead beings onto the path of perfect enlightenment and cause them to correctly practice the ten virtues. Having heard the qualities of the Buddha, they will be delighted. They will not delay long and will soon draw near to the Buddha. They will awaken to Buddhahood through pure and stainless enlightenment, thereby liberating countless beings from endless suffering. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, these four are the practices by which Bodhisattvas fully engage in the conduct of a Bodhisattva. What are the four? A mind without anger is the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and completely abandoning hypocrisy, flattery, and measuring by gain, dwelling in solitary places, and

Giving up all stinginess and not expecting fruition, desiring the Dharma day and night, and not seeking faults in those who speak the Dharma. These four acts of protecting the country are the bodhisattva conduct of bodhisattvas, giving up all stinginess and not expecting fruition, desiring the Dharma day and night, and not seeking faults in those who speak the Dharma. These four acts of protecting the country are the Dharma of fully practicing the bodhisattva conduct of bodhisattvas. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: One who desires unsurpassed Bodhi, has no jealousy and no anger, does not find fault with anyone, has no hypocrisy, no pretense, and no mind of playfulness. The wisdom of a householder is also the root of suffering, staying far away from association with evil people, after renouncing, not looking at them, one who desires liberation dwells in a solitary place. Because it shows the solitary borderland, obtaining peace, not relying on everything, not caring about body and life, dwelling like a lion and conquering enemies. When seeking wisdom for the sake of the path to enlightenment, not being satisfied with small roots of virtue, always like a bird, abandoning everything, not dwelling in the world. For example, dwelling alone like a rhinoceros, like a lion, there is no fear, like a deer, not trusting the dangers of the land, he is not satisfied by offerings. Seeing these beings falling into the abyss, striving for complete liberation. If one carefully practices virtuous Dharma, I will also become a friend to these beings. Wanting these actions of noble people, speaking pleasant words with a smiling face, always without vexation for the lovely and unlovely, abiding without attachment like the wind. Loving emptiness and signlessness, understanding all conditioned things as illusions. Broad-minded, fond of peace and gentleness, he always feeds on the taste of nectar. In any case, one should accomplish the path to enlightenment, he always fully practices what he thinks. When seeking dharani and fearlessness, desiring qualities, enduring hundreds of sufferings. The conduct of a Bodhisattva.
