Everything does not arise. Those who are impeccable in their discipline, possessing a mind that is tamed, peaceful, and tranquil. They also encourage sentient beings to practice the unsurpassed discipline of the Buddha. These four qualities of a country-guardian are the qualities that delight the bodhisattvas residing in a retinue. What are the four? The country-guardian seeing the Buddha is a quality that delights the bodhisattvas residing in a retinue. The country-guardian hearing the Dharma that accords with it is a quality that delights the bodhisattvas residing in a retinue. The country-guardian completely abandoning all doubts is a quality that delights the bodhisattvas residing in a retinue. The country-guardian enduring the Dharma that is without an object is a quality that delights the bodhisattvas residing in a retinue. Those four qualities of a country-guardian are the qualities that delight the bodhisattvas residing in a retinue. For this, this is the nature of Dharma; it should be said thus. With splendor, illuminating all the worlds in every way, the perfect Buddha, the supreme among humans, may they be seen in all lifetimes. When seeking the supreme, sacred enlightenment, for the sake of liberating sentient beings, abiding with joy and reverence, thus honoring the king of men. Also hearing the peaceful Dharma that accords with the guides. Having heard it, with a firm mind, diligently applying it properly. Hearing the Dharma without an object, all this Dharma is without sentient beings, and in this, without a self, doubt about the Dharma does not arise. That one completely abandons all possessions, constantly without any grasping. Seeing those who come to study, the mind is greatly delighted. Abandoning fields, lands, earth, life, sons, and wives, abandoning everything, that one's mind does not waver in any way. A country-guardian bodhisattva should not look at four things. What are the four? A country-guardian bodhisattva should not look at the state of household life. A country-guardian bodhisattva should not look at gain and respect after having gone forth. A country-guardian bodhisattva should not look at becoming familiar with household life. A country-guardian bodhisattva should not look at body and life. A country-guardian bodhisattva

Those four dharmas should not be looked at. Under no circumstances should one associate with women and men. Live alone like a rhinoceros, and be free from defilement with an undefiled mind. They are not happy with gains, nor discouraged by losses. With few desires, content with little, abandoning deceit and pretense. For the sake of sentient beings, strive with perseverance, be generous and gentle, and abide completely. Seek the wisdom of the Buddha, meditation, diligence, and the perfection of qualities. Disregarding body and life, completely abandon the root of suffering. With a mind as firm as a vajra, constantly practice the path to enlightenment. Even if the body is cut into pieces, their minds will not waver. Striving with great determination here, hoping for omniscience. These four protections of the country are the dharmas that eliminate the suffering of Bodhisattvas. What are the four? Protecting the country, with flawless discipline, is the dharma that eliminates the suffering of Bodhisattvas. Protecting the country, not abandoning dwelling in solitude, is the dharma that eliminates the suffering of Bodhisattvas. Protecting the country, being in harmony with the four noble lineages, is the dharma that eliminates the suffering of Bodhisattvas. Protecting the country, obtaining vast learning, is the dharma that eliminates the suffering of Bodhisattvas. These four protections of the country are the dharmas that eliminate the suffering of Bodhisattvas. This is the nature of dharma here, therefore it should be said thus. Desiring the excellent discipline of the Buddha, protect the discipline like a flawless jewel. They do not now think of themselves as disciplined and well-tamed. They always join their minds with discipline. They always dwell in empty, solitary places. They have no concept of self, nor attachment to life. They see all forms as like grass, trees, and walls. Here, they see that there is no man, woman, or self. They rejoice in the four noble lineages, without deceit or pretense. Those who are mindful practice diligently with firm resolve. They always strive for learning and qualities. They seek the qualities and great power of the Sugata.
