For the sake of meaning, he jumped into the great cliff of burning flames. Having heard this, liking and disliking, all completely abandoned, earnestly abide. Having heard of various teachings, qualities, and abundance, if one never generates desire for these, where would enlightenment be in non-dharmic desires? It is like a mirror not clear in front of a blind person. Bhadrapala, in the past, in a time before countless eons, even more countless, vast, inconceivable, incomparable, immeasurable, at that time, the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, complete in knowledge and conduct, Sugata, knower of the world, unsurpassed guide of beings to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, named Meaningful Accomplishment of Wisdom, appeared in the world. Bhadrapala, at that time, at that moment, there appeared a king named Light Possessor. Bhadrapala, the king Light Possessor ruled Jambudvipa, ten thousand yojanas in length and breadth. Bhadrapala, at that time, in Jambudvipa there were twenty thousand cities and a billion households. Bhadrapala, where did the king Light Possessor reside? The city of the king Light Possessor was named Jewel Light, twelve yojanas in length from east to west, seven yojanas in width from north to south, for the sake of the seven jewels, seven levels of steps were built, decorated with peacock eye patterns, making it very beautiful. At that time, the lifespan of sentient beings was ten billion years. Bhadrapala, the king Light Possessor had a son named Light of Merit, with a good form, beautiful, pleasing to see, with a good complexion, complete, endowed with excellence. As soon as he was born, a thousand treasures of the seven jewels appeared. In the king's palace, there also appeared about ten people's worth of treasures of the seven jewels. Bhadrapala, as soon as the young prince Light of Merit was born, all the sentient beings of Jambudvipa were delighted. Those sentient beings who were in prison were also liberated from prison. Bhadrapala, the young prince

Then, the youth named Sonam Oser (Merit Radiance) mastered all the worldly arts in seven days. From then on, the gods of the Pure Abode realms, at the hour of noon, said to the young prince Sonam Oser (Merit Radiance): Young man, be mindful! Be skilled in discerning impermanence! Young man, the lives of people are not long, they will surely pass away. See through the illusion of the world, and do not act contrary to karma and its effects. At that time, those sons of the gods spoke these verses: Young man, do not be heedless! Do not be controlled by heedlessness! The Sugata praises mindfulness, and the Sugatas also rebuke heedlessness. Those who are mindful here, who are not stingy with good deeds, who possess compassion and loving-kindness for all beings, they will soon become the supreme among humans. All the Sugatas who have passed away, who are here now, and who are yet to come, are exalted by their virtues. They abide firmly on the path of mindfulness. Food and drink, clothing and nourishment, gold and silver, jewels, pearls, and ornaments, have been given away by them for countless eons. They seek this supreme Bodhi. Hands and feet, as well as ears and noses, should be generously given to those who beg. Having perfected all the qualities of Bodhi, they will soon become the supreme among humans. Kingship, happiness, suffering, wives, and all wealth, should be completely abandoned. Look upon all conditioned things as like illusions. Abide without desire. Life is impermanent, constantly changing, and as fragile as a clay pot. It is like the seventh day, not eternal. Young man, do not be attached to this, it is not virtuous. When falling into the lower realms, even parents cannot protect you. Whatever good or bad deeds a person does, they will always follow them like a shadow. Because of desire, in the vast ocean of samsara, beings pointlessly fight each other. There is nothing unprofitable that you have not done; you have only endured suffering in vain. Thus, you

May I attain enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings! Even if my feet, flesh, and skin dry up in seeking the unparalleled and supreme state! Even so, do not feel weary. It is difficult to encounter the coming of the Sugata, and it is extremely difficult to hear the Dharma of peace. Strive diligently, dispel the forces of Mara, and you will soon attain the wisdom of the Buddha. Always rely on good spiritual friends, and completely abandon evil spiritual friends. They always lead to the path of goodness, and always turn you away from the wrong path. Make your diligence extremely firm, completely abandon desire for body and life, meditate with a diamond-like steadfast heart, and abide in this path of Buddhahood. The noble and holy beings of the past, the Illuminators, all delighted in practicing in solitary places when seeking the supreme and unsurpassed state. You too should turn to the path they practiced. Always be happy to dwell in solitude. Abandon parents, children, beloved relatives, and all those dear to your heart, do not be attached to body and life, and seek the vast wisdom of the Sugata. In that borderland, the young prince was enveloped by the rays of merit, and for ten years he was never overcome by drowsiness or sleep. He was never distracted, never playful, never joyful, never indulgent. He never went to the garden, never marveled at seeing friends, never delighted in song and dance. He never developed desire for the kingdom, wealth, houses, and cities. In this way, without paying attention to anything, he thought alone and remained in that state. Inwardly, he took to heart the lack of essence in the world, its destruction, its lack of breath, its unpleasantness, its encounter with suffering, its separation from suffering, its bewilderment of children, the lack of joy in samsara, the deceptive nature of royal ease, the insatiable nature of excessive delight in existence, and the constant contradiction of individual lives. Thinking thus, 'I am among the unenterprising people like children, I shall pass my life in silence.'
