With the increase of harmful thoughts, and with the practice of this Dharma by those who are of irrational retinues and behaviors. They will have a state of complete non-inquiry, and will pursue listening to the Dharma as an important matter. With irrational behavior, they will fully take birth in poor families. After those leave home from poor families, they will generate joy in this Dharma merely by obtaining gains. Those will not even have confession of sins, let alone mention the realization of wisdom. Those will abandon the qualities of the Buddha, and merely with the benefit of knowledge and the attainment of faith, they will claim themselves to be renunciates. The ruler of the land will not even speak of tolerance in accordance with such people, let alone the wisdom of the Buddha. For those, even the good realms are distant, let alone mention the desire for enlightenment. The ruler of the land, I say that such people have eight dharmas that obstruct enlightenment. What are the eight? They are: being born in the three lower realms, being born in a border region, being born in a poor family, being born in a low caste, having an ugly appearance and dull understanding, encountering evil friends, being plagued by many diseases, and dying without abandoning negligence. Ruler of the land, these eight dharmas are said to be obstacles to enlightenment. Why is that? Ruler of the land, I do not say that promising with words is enlightenment. I do not say that acting hypocritically is completely pure conduct. I do not say that acting deceitfully is the conduct of enlightenment. I do not say that being greedy for wealth is offering to the Buddha. I do not say that having arrogance is completely pure wisdom. I do not say that seeking wisdom is cutting off doubts. I do not say that being stingy is completely pure mind. I do not say that being unindustrious is obtaining many resources. I do not say that seeking non-genuine qualities is attaining good realms. I do not say that being stingy at home is completely pure. I do not say that having artificial behavior is meeting the Buddha. I do not say that being attached to home is pure, completely pure. For the disrespectful, the mind

I do not say complete purity. I do not say desiring Dharma without knowing enough. I do not say seeking Dharma everywhere with attachment to body and life. Just as a foolish person is blamed by his neighbors, I will not blame the six teachers in that way. Why? Because they distort the words of others and deceive the world, including the gods. Then, the Blessed One spoke these verses at that time: Not well tamed, wild and arrogant, disrespectful, with pride, with great attachment, overcome by afflictions, base and full of afflictions, such people are very far from supreme enlightenment. If overcome by attachment, laziness will increase. If controlled by laziness, the mind will become depressed. If the mind is depressed, the precepts will be completely ruined. If the precepts are ruined, the good realms will decline. Having become impoverished, they renounce the world, and having obtained offerings, they are freed from poverty. Those people are like throwing away a heavy burden of gold and instead picking up a burden of grass. Seeking gain, they go to solitary places, and having gone there, they seek clothes and relatives. Having abandoned supernatural powers, wisdom, and perfect confidence, they again cling to relatives. Because of ignorance, controlled by pride, they fall into the lower realms. They cling to beings without leisure, the poor, those of low birth, the blind, the ugly, and those with little power. Those people have actually completely lost their conduct and norms, carelessly obtaining gain, and their memory is completely lost. They will fall into an unbearable great precipice, and then they will not be liberated for billions of kalpas. If enlightenment can be attained here, then Devadatta could also attain enlightenment. Just as a bird falls scattered by the wind, so too are those defiled by attachment, unable to be liberated. Merit diminishes, they lust after the wives of others, their precepts are impure, they fall away from virtuous dharmas, and they do not attain wisdom with the mind of enlightenment. Those people are like the wood of a cemetery that does not adhere to the Dharma. Those who seek enlightenment and seek the Dharma of the Buddha, if they live in solitary places, will also not attain liberation. It is like tying a monkey tightly with a rope, so too are those controlled by pride, unable to attain enlightenment. For the sake of seeking enlightenment, for the sake of the words of the Dharma, I have given up my own cherished life. Having abandoned the Dharma and not possessing diligence, becoming meaningless, they will fall from the Dharma. I have previously explained it well.
