I will attain the fruit of Buddhahood, and my name will be called 'One with Bones.' Maudgalyayana, my prediction today that Devadatta will become a Pratyekabuddha is itself a complete overcoming of the suffering of samsara. Maudgalyayana, my complete overcoming of Devadatta is because his previous aspiration was just like that. What is the reason for that? Because in a previous life I vowed to completely overcome Devadatta, I said, 'I will overcome you, no one else can overcome.' Maudgalyayana, Devadatta only generates the cause and condition from nirvana, not from elsewhere, so Devadatta from now on will not generate roots of virtue from others either, but only generate a completely joyful mind towards him. Because he said, 'I take refuge in the Buddha,' by the cause and condition of that root of virtue, he will also attain the path of a Pratyekabuddha in the future. Maudgalyayana, for a long time, always regarding sentient beings with the perception of parents, for those who are without protectors and without refuge, impoverished and lacking wealth, repeatedly wandering in samsara and entering evil paths, foolish and lacking knowledge due to ignorance, always becoming blind and lacking eyes, who will become our guide? Who will become protector and refuge? For those who think like this, I alone vowed with compassion to become protector and refuge. Maudgalyayana, in order to remember this, even if any sentient being speaks unpleasant words to me with harsh language, I will not retort. Even if they speak unpleasant harsh words, I will not retort. Even if they are angry or beat me, I will never retaliate. What is the reason for that? Because I always give definite happiness to all sentient beings and completely eliminate the happiness of suffering. I should not give them harm. Among sentient beings, who is able to endure? Only he himself is able to endure, so today I learn the Dharma of patience for sentient beings, and the Dharma of being very close to peace, and the Dharma of being extremely subdued, and I will be subdued like the elephant king Jñāna. Not like an untamed elephant.

Thinking thus. Maudgalyayana, for example, a very tame elephant, when entering the battlefield, has no hesitation in its mind, and is able to endure the sound of the big drum, the sound of the conch, and the loud cries. Even if it hears such terrible sounds, it is not afraid and does not fear. It can also endure cold, heat, mosquitoes, blood-sucking gadflies, wind and rain, hunger and thirst. It can also endure the cutting of various sharp swords, arrows, spears, short spears, the throwing of iron wheels, and the whipping with whips, and without fear and dread, it directly rushes to the battlefield, without hesitation and retreat. Maudgalyayana, a very tame elephant does not think, "I should not enter the enemy's battlefield," but only thinks, "I should win this enemy's battlefield." Maudgalyayana, similarly, when I was practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I made great vows in my mind to tame the minds of sentient beings. If sentient beings speak harsh, jarring, and unpleasant words, I will not retaliate with harm. If they argue with me, I will not respond. If they harm me with weapons, sticks, rubble, and stones, and even take my life, I will not retreat from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. I will not conceptually think, "This is a lineage to be accepted, this is a lineage not to be accepted, this is a lineage to be served, this is a lineage not to be served," therefore, for these things, I have no sorrow and regret, no anger and resentment, and no weariness of the Bodhisattva path, therefore I will not think, "Now I should not enter this enemy's battlefield," but only think, "I should completely conquer the sinful enemy's battlefield, attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and completely liberate the immeasurable and boundless sentient beings of the three realms." Maudgalyayana, in the past, when practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I practiced so much patience.

Loving-kindness and compassion generated towards sentient beings, even if expressed in words, would be inexhaustible. Furthermore, the son of Maudgalyayana, in a past life, there was a heretical sage named Endurance Strength. He vowed that he would not generate hatred towards sentient beings and practiced accordingly. At that time, there was a demon named Evil Intent, who thought: Why shouldn't I go to that sage today, destroy his practice of patience, make him angry, and thus turn him away from the resolve to endure? So, he sent a thousand intelligent men, who surrounded him completely, using harsh language to insult him and falsely slander him. They reviled him with all sorts of foul and inappropriate words. They insulted him while walking, when going to the city, when entering the city, when eating, after eating, after noon, when leaving the city, when going to his dwelling in the dark forest, when standing, when sitting, when sleeping, when walking, even when breathing in and out. They constantly followed him, incessantly insulting him with all sorts of vile language. At that time, those thousand men, under the command of the demon, for eighty-four thousand years, insulted the sage Endurance Strength with harsh language. Then, the demon Evil Intent, when the sage Endurance Strength was entering the city, poured his own urine on his head, into his begging bowl, smeared it on his Dharma robes and begging bowl, smeared it on his body, and even flicked his head with a whisk. At that time, the sage Endurance Strength, for eighty-four thousand years, although insulted and slandered with harsh language by a thousand violent men, had no hatred or resentment in his heart, and did not even feel discouraged or disheartened. He even said to himself: What wrong have I done?
