Nor did I speak ill or hold grudges. For eighty-four thousand years, I never looked at the evil Mara with hateful eyes, nor did I say, "What have I done wrong?" Maudgalyayana, those thousand people who delighted in abuse, knowing that the strength of the ascetic Endurance could not be destroyed even after eighty-four thousand years of abuse, generated a mind of great joy and confessed all their faults. They said, "What kind of Dharma do you seek with this thing? We also want to attain that Dharma." Maudgalyayana, those thousand people who were skilled in abuse, having gained great joy in the ascetic, offered and served him with respectful hearts. They made him their guru and praised him. Although the ascetic accepted their service and reverence, he had no attachment or clinging in his mind. Maudgalyayana, do you think that the ascetic Endurance at that time was someone else? You should not think that way, for it was I myself. At that time, I truly embraced such a Dharma of endurance that even though the evil Mara constantly abused and slandered me with harsh words, my mind had no wavering or change. Maudgalyayana, those thousand men who delighted in abuse, having generated great joy in the ascetic Endurance, confessed their sins and, following the ascetic Endurance, generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. At that time, I completely tamed them and properly established them in the Buddha's teachings. Those thousand men practiced the six perfections completely, and eventually attained perfect and complete enlightenment, and all entered into the realm of nirvana without remainder. Maudgalyayana, do you think that the evil Mara sent a thousand men to abuse me at that time was someone else? You should not think that way, for it was Devadatta himself. The sixth fascicle is complete. Furthermore, Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that in the past, I...

Having completely given my body and mind to sentient beings, I became a slave and servant to the people of the world. At that time, many people made me do all sorts of things. Some made me dispose of urine and feces, some made me dispose of manure, some I disposed of manure, some I disposed of, some made me fetch roots. Some made me fetch grain, milk, yogurt, butter, grain oil, and honey. Some made me fetch wood, coal, fire, and water. Even though I was made to do all sorts of tasks like these, Maudgalyayana, I do not remember ever having the thought: 'I will never follow the one who makes me dispose of urine and feces.' I do not remember not following the one who made me fetch flowers, incense, garlands, anointing perfumes, powdered incense, food, drink, and fruit. Maudgalyayana, I certainly do not remember ever having the thought: 'I should follow the one who makes me do good deeds, and I should not follow the one who makes me do bad deeds.' Maudgalyayana, I also do not remember ever having the thought: 'I should follow the Kshatriya caste, and I should not follow the Brahmin caste; I should follow the Brahmin caste, and I should not follow the Kshatriya caste; I should follow the Vaishya caste, and I should not follow the Chandala caste; I should follow the Chandala caste, and I should not follow the Vaishya caste; I should follow the Kshatriya and Brahmin castes, and I should not follow the Vaishya and Chandala castes.' I also had no thought that 'This person is great, this person is small,' or any distinction between them, or that 'I should follow this person, and I should not follow that person.' Maudgalyayana, I simply followed those who called me first with a joyful heart. Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that when I was previously practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I never failed to do my best in any righteous task that anyone asked me to do.

No. Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I cannot recall anything that I should have done that was not thoroughly completed, or any accumulation of virtuous deeds that was not fully accomplished. In short, when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I never had any attachment to the body, let alone material possessions. When I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, I never had the thought that "this is my enjoyment" regarding the objects of enjoyment, but due to the ripening of past karma, I naturally possessed enjoyment. Regarding the objects of enjoyment, I thought like this: these things should be enjoyed in common with all sentient beings, and just as I have a share in these things, sentient beings also have a share. That is what I thought. Maudgalyayana, even though I was close to the Dharma of the Buddha because of practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, I would not think, "I also have a share in my enjoyment, and sentient beings also have a share," but rather, "these enjoyments belong to sentient beings, and I have no share at all." Maudgalyayana, even though I obtained the result of being close to the Dharma of the Buddha, I did not have any attachment to it, nor did I completely collect and accept it, but I preferred to completely abandon all dharmas, and I did not prefer to accept all dharmas. I preferred all empty dharmas, and I did not prefer all existent dharmas. I preferred all peaceful dharmas, and I did not prefer the characteristics of the entities of dharmas. I preferred that which was originally non-existent, and I did not prefer that which was originally existent. Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, in countless hundreds of thousands of eons, in the darkness of the night, I lit my own body with fire, illuminated the sentient beings who had lost their way, and showed them the way. Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, in countless hundreds of thousands of eons, for the meat-eating beings...
