Having become the owner of the great elephant king, beautiful and pleasing like the northern star, possessing great strength and wisdom. At that time, many elephants stayed overnight on a dangerous and narrow mountain path, which had only one road. A hunter saw this and dug a large pit on that dangerous path at night, thinking: These many elephants will fall here, and everything will be mine, and I will gladly take it. After digging the pit at night, he lured many elephants and sent them onto the dangerous road with the pit. When the many elephants came and saw the large pit, they could not cross it. Maudgalyayana, at that time, the owner of the elephants lay his own body across the pit, making a bridge, and five hundred elephants crossed over his back and passed beyond it. After many elephants had passed, he leaped away by his own power. At that time, a mountain deity spoke in verse: Although the wicked one dug a deep pit, the wise elephant king, when he considered himself and others, the deep pit was dug in vain. Maudgalyayana, do you think that the king of elephants at that time, who had sharp senses and great power, was someone else? Do not think like that, it was I myself. The five hundred elephants that appeared at that time were the five hundred monks whom Devadatta is now trying to destroy. The hunters who were there at that time were Devadatta and the five monks, namely Khanadravaja, Katamorkatisha, Great Sea Giver, Kokalika, and others.
