Sixth, the chapter on Great Compassion. Sixth, the chapter on Great Compassion. Fifth volume. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought to himself: "The Blessed One is so endowed with great compassion, and so well teaches the practices of a Bodhisattva, that the Blessed One is truly wonderful!" Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva perfectly accomplishes the Dharma of the Buddha and enables sentient beings to understand the meaning of non-origination and non-cessation. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts in the mind of the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, spoke to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: "Maudgalyāyana, it is so, it is so. The Thus-Gone Ones are endowed with great compassion. If any of my disciples were to hear about the meaning of being endowed with great compassion, their minds would become confused and they would not have faith. Maudgalyāyana, let alone the great compassion of the Thus-Gone One! If I were to fully describe the great compassion that I possessed when I practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past, your mind would become confused and you would not have faith." Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana said to the Blessed One: "Excellent! Blessed One, please tell me a little about the great compassion that you possessed when you practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past." The Blessed One said: "Maudgalyāyana, listen very well and keep it in mind. I will also show you a little about the great compassion that you practiced when you practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva in the past. Although it is impossible to describe all the great compassion that was practiced when the conduct of a Bodhisattva was practiced in the past, that great compassion abides in four things. What are the four? The great compassion of a Bodhisattva is called great compassion when the Bodhisattva abides in great compassion and thereby accomplishes the Dharma of the Buddha. Son of Maudgalyāyana, I wish that sentient beings...

Endowed with such great compassion. Endowed with such great aspirations, therefore, as many sentient beings as there are, as many sentient beings as there are who experience suffering in the great hell of Avici, and sentient beings in the great hells of Black Rope, Samghata, Reviving, Wailing, Great Wailing, Hot, and Very Hot, I always, for the sake of those sentient beings, even if I experience whatever suffering there is in the great hells until their sinful deeds are purified, I will have no regrets in my mind. Maudgalyayana, if there is any cause or condition that will benefit sentient beings, I will accept all of them, and having liberated those sentient beings from the great hells, I will take the suffering upon myself, even if I take upon myself the suffering of hell for one sentient being until the sinful deeds of the sentient being come to an end, at that time I will have no regrets in my mind. Maudgalyayana, I have generated such aspirations and great diligence, and if wise people like this, such as the Buddhas and their Shravaka disciples, have the cause and condition to ask questions in a rational way like this, I will accept the suffering and liberate sentient beings from the hells, Maudgalyayana, if the wise ones hear of this, they will praise my great learning, generate the mind of enlightenment, give generously, keep the precepts, practice patience, initiate diligence, and praise relying on virtuous friends. Maudgalyayana, having heard that, I generated great diligence, and in order to fully practice the Dharma, I generated superior intention, and in order to obtain the great and perfect Dharma of the Buddhas, I initiated diligence. In order to perfect the Paramitas, I fully practiced patience. Maudgalyayana, how did I fully practice patience in the past? In the past, when I became a Bodhisattva, I generated this mind: As many sentient beings as come in the ten directions of the world, whether they have form or are formless, whether they have perception or are without perception.
