Ma. Whether it is non-perception or not non-perception, all these sentient beings, having obtained human bodies, come to me and say: 'Hey, you have generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. We are attached to the pleasures of the five desires and are greatly blessed with the necessities of life. If you cannot give to us, you will not attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment.' At that time, will these sentient beings obstruct me with harsh words? Will they slander me with untruthful words? Will they harm my body with swords, sticks, and tiles because they do not agree with my mind? Even so, I will not generate anger and regret, and I should thus tame my mind. These sentient beings are ignorant and perform ignorant actions because they lack knowledge. If I also generate anger and resentment towards these foolish and ignorant sentient beings, then what difference is there between me and them? They have not entered the path, while I have entered the path of virtue, so today I should endure the suffering from these sentient beings, and like the great earth, I should bear both good and bad without generating thoughts of anger.' Mongala, I used to cultivate patience in this way. Furthermore, Mongala, for a long time I have always regarded all sentient beings as the same. For example, there is a householder who is very wealthy, possessing abundant wealth and precious jewels, and who has male servants, female servants, and laborers. He obtains a son by practicing the eight vows, and he cherishes him in his heart, never tiring of looking at him. Mongala, that householder always seeks good things for that son, always gives good things, always gives benefits, and does not give harm or unhelpful things. Similarly, Mongala, I have always regarded all sentient beings as if they were my only child, so for a long time I have always sought good things for sentient beings and given help, rather than giving harm and distrust.

He does not give away miserly things. Mongala, from a long time ago, I have shown the right path to sentient beings who have lost their way, and to sentient beings who have gone astray, and have correctly placed them on the right path. Mongala, therefore, it should be recognized that the Thus-gone One has regarded sentient beings with a very loving mind, like looking at an only child, cherishing and pitying them, from a long time ago. Mongala, in the past, a large caravan of merchants was traveling at night, and because they got lost, they went astray. Because the night became dark, they did not know where to go, and everyone said this: We have lost our way, and there is no protector, no refuge, and no place to stay. Then, among sentient beings, which god, naga, yaksha, human, or non-human will show us the way and enable us to find the correct path? Who will help us with compassion and give light in this dark, lost, and dangerous night? Mongala, at that time, in a solitary forest, a non-Buddhist hermit was living in a grass hut. In the dark night, he heard the sound of many merchants crying out in pitiful voices, and he thought: Today, many merchants have lost their way in this solitary forest because the night has become dark. If I do not protect them, that is not right. Moreover, these merchants may be harmed or even have their lives taken by tigers, lions, wolves, elephants, foxes, or fierce wild beasts. Mongala, at that time, that hermit made a great sound and said to the merchants: Hey, merchants, do not be afraid! Today I will protect you and show you the right path with light. At that time, that hermit cheered up the merchants with words, wrapped his two hands with cloth, poured clarified butter all over them, lit them on fire to make a lamp, and showed the merchants the way. Mongala, at that time, the merchants each thought: This hermit is truly amazing, for our sake, he does not even spare his body and life.

He thought, "Now there is nowhere to go." That sage Mongala, by showing the way to the merchants with the light of burning Laba, also developed great compassion for sentient beings, and thought, "When will I attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment, and make the light of Dharma for the sentient beings who have gone astray, and guide them to the right path?" That Mongala At that time, even though both hands were burned, there was not the slightest change in body and mind. Why is that? Because a Bodhisattva who abides in the supreme intention has no attachment to body and life when accomplishing the benefit of others. By the cause and condition of giving completely with a pure intention, his hands were restored as before, and the wounds disappeared. The merchants also found the road, and when they saw that the sage's hands had no wounds in the morning, they developed a wonderful thought, thinking: This sage has great magical power, and he sacrificed his hands at night to illuminate us and guide us to the right path, but his hands have no burns at all. Without a doubt, this sage is a great practitioner and has great qualities. At that time, the merchants said to the sage Mongala: Sage, it is very good that you have done such a difficult thing! What do you hope to gain from this practice now? The sage said: O merchants, I hope to attain the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment through this action, and liberate you from the suffering of samsara, and guide the sentient beings who have gone astray to the right path. At that time, the merchants were overjoyed and said, "What kind of things should we use to repay this sage?" The sage said: You should practice virtue wholeheartedly and do not be negligent. Seek the truth as the senses have shown. After saying this, the merchants were overjoyed and respectfully prostrated, and then left.
