Why is that? Because those fierce carnivores always kill small animals and eat their flesh, creating many sins of killing, yet they are still not satisfied. So I made a vow, saying, 'May I be born here as a huge domestic animal, so that all those meat-eating and blood-drinking beings can be satisfied.' Therefore, immediately after my death, I transformed into a huge domestic animal, allowing those fierce carnivores to eat my flesh and drink my blood, satisfying them all. Similarly, I have taken countless bodies, billions upon billions, to benefit sentient beings. Maudgalyayana, even if I were to spend one kalpa, or more than one kalpa, recounting how I, as a Bodhisattva in the past, satisfied those hungry and thirsty beings with my own flesh and blood, I would not be able to finish. Maudgalyayana, therefore, I have generated great compassion for those suffering beings in the past. Furthermore, Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that in the past, when I saw sentient beings tormented by suffering, I thought, 'This is the race that I have abandoned and cannot completely protect!' So I went to them and asked, 'What kind of suffering do you have? What do you need?' They replied, 'We are now very hungry and thirsty.' Hearing them say this, I said, 'What kind of food and drink do you want?' They said to me, 'We are blood-drinking and flesh-eating beings. If you give us the flesh and blood of your body, we will have rosy complexions and healthy bodies.' I agreed to them, cut off my own flesh, drew my own blood, and gave it to those beings. Maudgalyayana, at that time, there was no regret or pity in my heart, nor was there sadness or reluctance. Instead, I thought, 'Now, as much flesh as I cut off from my body, that much suffering of samsara will be reduced and disappear.' Therefore, for a long time, I have been delighted to continuously practice giving. Even with such giving, I am still very happy and satisfied.

Therefore, one can attain happiness. Due to such causes and conditions, it should be understood that the Tathagata has great compassion for sentient beings. Furthermore, Maudgalyayana, I clearly remember that in the past, there was a king named Great Strength, who possessed great power of merit and had accumulated a great deal of virtuous roots. At that time, King Great Strength thought to himself, 'Why don't I hold a grand offering and almsgiving now, so that all sentient beings can be satisfied?' Thinking this way, he held a grand offering and almsgiving, giving food to those who wanted food, drink to those who wanted drink, as well as clothes, bedding, gold, silver, precious objects, carriages, young servants, livestock, grains, gems, crystal, lapis lazuli, coral, agate, and other treasures, as well as flowers, incense, garlands, unguents, incense powder, silk curtains, umbrellas, banners, sons, daughters, male servants, female servants, workers, horses, elephants, cows, sheep, and the produce of the fields. Whatever they desired, he gave them joyfully according to their wishes, giving everything away. Maudgalyayana, when King Great Strength was giving such extensive alms, Indra, the lord of the gods, thought to himself, 'Why don't I create obstacles for this king, so that he cannot obtain the result?' Then he transformed himself into a Brahmin and went to where the king was, and asked the king, 'O great subduer of offerings, what kind of things are being given away here?' The king replied, 'Brahmin, I have given away everything I own, and there is nothing I am reluctant to give.' The Brahmin said, 'If that is your vow, then can you give me what I ask for today?' King Great Strength said, 'Didn't I say that I would give away everything I own?' The Brahmin said, 'Great King, if that is the case, then today I want a part of the king's body.' The king thought, 'This Brahmin does not want wealth or food, but has come here today to destroy my grand offering.'

wanted to destroy it, thinking that if I did not give the limbs of my body, my own great offering would be destroyed, so he said to the Brahmin: Take the limbs of my body that I give you. The Brahmin said: Great King, are there many instances of regretting saying such a thing? King Great Strength said: There is no regret in my mind, and now many students have gathered from the four directions, and I will satisfy them all. The Brahmin said: It is difficult to satisfy even me alone now, what need is there to mention satisfying many others? Then King Great Strength cut off his own hand with a sharp sword and said to the Brahmin: Take this hand. Maugdal, when King Great Strength cut off his own hand, his mind did not change and he did not regret it. In this way, he gave completely with one-pointed mind, and because of giving completely, his hand was restored as before. At that time, King Great Strength cut off the limbs of his body with a sword and gave them to the Brahmin, but they grew back again. Maugdal, at that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, also because of this cause and condition, the merit of the gods was exhausted, his mind was completely tormented, and he cried out in great pain, and with that body he manifested and fell into the great sentient hell, the uninterrupted hell. Maugdal, if you think that the King Great Strength's complete giving of his body at that time was another person, do not look at it that way, it was himself. If you think that Indra, the lord of the gods, who wanted to obstruct the great offering at that time, was another person, do not look at it that way, it was Devadatta himself. Maugdal, at that time, Devadatta foolishly, with a mind of jealousy and hatred, wanted to obstruct my giving, but he was not able to destroy it, and instead fell into the great hell. Now I have awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and even if I establish the offering of the Dharma, Devadatta foolishly still, with a mind of hatred and jealousy, because of attachment to gain,
