And also very many. At that time, the monk Damashiri, upon hearing many monks reciting those verses, felt great sorrow in his heart, shed tears, and from that time on, went to the monastery. He again asked many monks: How did the Tathagata Merukandha instruct his disciples? If I hear it, I will practice according to what was taught. Many monks also answered him as before. Then, the monk Damashiri left those many monks and went alone to a secluded mountain and forest, desiring to seek the profound Dharma with one-pointed mind. At that time, among the Shravaka disciples of the previous Tathagata Merukandha, there was a great Shravaka named Shindu Danpa, who diligently practiced extremely secluded conduct, lived alone in a secluded mountain cave, had few desires and was content, whose mind was eager to completely abandon, who had done what needed to be done, an Arhat possessing the six superknowledges and the three knowledges, just like the great Kashyapa in my teachings now. At that time, the monk Shindu Danpa wrote these verses on the rock face of the mountain cave where he lived, as follows: Because the taste of desire has been experienced, samsara will not cease. Having nourished the enemy, one enters the cemetery, and pointlessly experiences much suffering. This body is impure, like a corpse, from nine holes flows impurity. Just as worms like impurity, so too are fools attached to the body. Incorrect conceptualization is the root of the five desires. The wise do not conceptualize, and the five desires will cease. From wrong thought arises great desire, from great desire arises affliction. If one remembers correctly, without weakness, even the remaining afflictions will be exhausted. Fourth fascicle. In short, the monk Shindu Danpa wrote these four verses on the rock face of the mountain cave, and the monk Damashiri went to the secluded mountain cave, and after a long time, saw these four verses on the rock face of the mountain cave.

Having seen these written words, he learned to recite them and kept their meaning in mind. Before long, he attained the five supernormal knowledges. Then, he went to the former residence of the Tathagata Mero Gandha, prostrated, circumambulated three times, and sat in the lotus position, saying: "I have not seen the Tathagata in this place, and I will not leave this place until I have heard other Dharma." Thus, he made a vow. Later, Indra, the lord of the gods, through recitation, learned of the Sutra of Eight Thousand Verses spoken by the Tathagata Mero Gandha. Indra, the lord of the gods, knowing the superior intention of the monk Dama Shiri by mind, descended from the abode of the Thirty-Three Gods, went to him, and truly explained to him the Sutra of Eight Thousand Verses. In addition, he also bestowed the four verses of the basis of vast learning, the seven verses of various forms, and the dharani called the Fourteen Door Verses. The monk Dama Shiri, having heard this, also recited and upheld it, and thus obtained the light of wisdom on all dharmas. The sutras spoken by the Tathagata Mero Gandha, which are completely pure and in accordance with emptiness, in accordance with detachment, and are profound and extremely rich, also naturally appeared in his mind. Furthermore, he also saw the Tathagata Mero Gandha with the retinue of the Sangha of monks, as well as the pure chamber where he resided, the throne, the fourfold retinue, and all the retinue including gods, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and humans and non-humans. The monk Dama Shiri, having also obtained the light of wisdom on all dharmas, arose from his seat and gradually returned to his own country, went to his parents, and truly explained to his parents the sutras that are completely pure and in accordance with emptiness, in accordance with detachment, and are profound and extremely rich, and greatly praised the qualities of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, all

At that time, the parents of the monk Dama Shiri, the consorts in the palace, the great minister, and the retinues, having heard this Dharma, developed great faith and, with respectful minds, said to the monk Dama Shiri: 'Venerable one, please protect us and allow us to be ordained in the teachings of the Tathagata Mirogandha.' At that time, eighty-four thousand beings, including the king and the consorts, all became ordained at the same time. After being ordained, the names of all of them became the Sangha of monks of the Dama Shiri assembly. In this way, the monk Dama Shiri revived the teachings of the Tathagata Mirogandha and properly placed many sentient beings in happiness. Because of the love and great compassion of past lives, they had prayed to protect the sacred Dharma, therefore, the monk Dama Shiri traveled from one region to another, from one city to another, from one village to another, and also proclaimed the praises of the Tathagata Mirogandha and his Shravaka disciples. Furthermore, he also widely and correctly explained to sentient beings the Sutras that are completely pure, in accordance with emptiness, in accordance with detachment, profound, and extremely rich. Therefore, at that time, the monk Dama Shiri was also worshiped, served, respected, and honored by many people, and his fame was also widely spread. In this way, the monk Dama Shiri did great benefit for many sentient beings, and after that, when he passed away, his disciples, monks, nuns, upasakas, and upasikas gathered together, piled up all kinds of fragrant wood, made offerings and cremated him, and then built a stupa of relics with a circumference of two yojanas, and respectfully offered, served, and honored it with flowers, incense, unguents, incense powders, umbrellas, banners, and various kinds of flags, and praised him. At the time of his death, the monk Dama Shiri was reborn again in this Jambudvipa.
