Chapter Four: The Chapter on Possessing Virtuous Roots Chapter Four: The Chapter on Possessing Virtuous Roots Volume Three. Then, the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Gangpo. Gangpo, any Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who has properly entered the Great Vehicle, if they constantly rely on and become accustomed to these four dharmas, then all virtuous dharmas will also be completely accumulated, and they will be fully endowed with all virtuous roots. What are the four? Gangpo, whether it is a son of good family or a daughter of good family, whoever has generated the mind of enlightenment in the Great Vehicle should rely on and meditate on the dharma of patience. When meditating on the dharma of patience in this way, if the mind becomes equal, then the perfections of extreme equality will also be heard. And the perfection of equality of all sentient beings will also be attained. When that Bodhisattva is endowed with the perfection of equality of mind and the perfection of equality of wisdom, whether walking, standing, sitting, lying down, sleeping, or awake, whether it is a pot of urine, a pot of poison, a pot of hot ashes, brooms, feces and ashes, or someone carrying hot ashes comes and pours it on the head, or all the limbs of the body are beaten, that Bodhisattva should not generate thoughts of hatred and resentment, should not let the mind be distracted and generate anger. Nor should one say, "What fault do I have?" Nor should one look at him with evil thoughts. One should single-mindedly pursue one's own Dharma, not abandoning the object to be accomplished, and thus tame one's own mind. When that person, for what cause and condition, comes carrying a pot of urine, a pot of poison, ashes, and fire, and harms my body, my body will not become sick or harmed by the causes and conditions of these things. Thus, when the Bodhisattva then separately examines the dharmas of many causes and conditions in this way, who is giving this object? To whom is this object being given? What thing is being given? He thus

When contemplating reality as it is, who is the giver? What is the receiver? What is the Dharma? Thus, no Dharma is truly seen. Likewise, when contemplating with true mindfulness and distinguishing individually, because this and that are not perceived, all Dharmas do not become objects of focus, nor are they seen. Because that Bodhisattva does not perceive or see all Dharmas, they do not generate hatred or resentment. If a Bodhisattva thinks in this way, but the thought of hatred and resentment arises, then again, with true mindfulness, they should think like this: What cause and condition of touch makes my body hot? Where are those touches perceived? Is it harmful to the body? Or is it harmful to the mind? If it is harmful to the body, then the body is like grass, wood, rubble, stone, and image, without discrimination, without awareness, not me, nor other. If it is harmful to the mind, then the mind is without color or form, arising and ceasing in an instant, not staying for a moment, not me, nor other, by falsely discriminating, one says, 'This is suffering, this is happiness, this is neither suffering nor happiness,' merely saying that, so today I should not generate discriminating with false discrimination. Today I should look at the true nature of equality and accomplish the deeds of the noble ones, not follow the deeds of childish ordinary people. What are the deeds of the noble ones? It is that which is far from all Dharmas and liberated. I am learning for the sake of distancing. I am learning for the sake of not encountering, but these false discriminations are all encounters, who do they encounter? They encounter attachment, they encounter hatred and ignorance. How do they encounter attachment, hatred, and ignorance?

If asked why this happens, it is because of ignorance towards the body, because of ignorance towards the view of the perishable aggregate, and because of attachment to the view of the perishable aggregate. When experiencing the suffering of the body, generating annoyance towards others is called encountering hatred. Because of being accompanied by ignorance towards the view of the perishable aggregate, because of attachment to the view of the perishable aggregate, and because of disagreeableness, generating annoyance towards others is called encountering delusion. If someone is bound by these three poisons and thus learns the causes and conditions of such unwholesome actions, even the Tathagatas will not act to protect them, let alone others. Now, I should thoroughly and separately examine the dharmas of causes and conditions, and thus contemplate the emptiness of dharmas. The Bodhisattva, by thus conforming to the correct view, and thus distinguishing the dharmas of causes and conditions, does not truly see who gives, who receives, or what things are. At that time, the Bodhisattva also thinks: all dharmas are born from many causes and conditions, therefore self and other are empty from the beginning, and must be empty without an object of focus. Why should I still engage in actions towards these non-holy dharmas without an object of focus, thereby generating hatred and inciting the causes and conditions of action? Now, I should generate a thought without hatred or resentment, and thus cultivate the dharma of non-action, non-arising, and non-obscuration, and contemplate the nature of emptiness of dharmas, and not follow my own mind. Now, I should contemplate the dharma of non-action, non-arising, and non-birth, and not abide in the dharma of action and arising. I should contemplate the dharmas as they truly are, and now I should not insist on perceiving this non-holy, non-existent dharma as a dharma, because insistently acting upon what is not true is hatred.
