are those who hold hatred and resentment. Why is that? Because dwelling in the nature of Dharma, there is hatred and resentment; for the true nature of all Dharmas, the ultimate emptiness, there is no nature of Dharma to be dwelt upon, since it is absent from the very beginning, so it should be understood in this way. If a Bodhisattva contemplates Dharmas in this way, his mind will become extremely serene, and hatred and resentment will not arise. Furthermore, whether that Bodhisattva is walking, standing, sitting, lying down, sleeping, or awake, at any time, if someone comes and scatters fragrant incense, incense powder, perfumed ointment, or supreme flowers on his body; or if his body is covered with incense, supreme flowers, *se-mo-do*, *campaka* flower garlands, and garlands of various flowers; or if his body is covered with extremely fine and soft supreme silk, such as *kāśika*, *kauśaka*, *kaumāpa*, *kauśeyaśa*, *kṣauma*, or *kāba*, and other fine and soft silks; or if excellent copper mirrors, parasols, victory banners, and streamers are hung above him; or if his body is covered with divine flowers, incense, supreme silk, and jewel garlands; or if someone brings divine food of supreme quality, endowed with the taste of nectar, and offers it to him, the Bodhisattva should not generate attachment or cling to these various offerings out of craving. The Bodhisattva should maintain equanimity towards these, thoroughly realize the equality of all Dharmas, and think thus: 'I will neither be angry with sentient beings, nor will I be attached to them.' Why is that? Because both love and hatred are afflictions. Now, I will not generate craving for these, but will properly realize the truth of all Dharmas. Why is that? Because among all afflictions, the affliction caused by craving is the heaviest. Just like that, this affliction can even destroy bones and limbs, so among the Dharmas that generate all bonds, craving is

The mind is therefore very attached. What is the reason for this? If the object of desire is not obtained as desired, anger will arise. People generate desire and craving for their own bodies, and if someone harms them, anger will arise. Therefore, anger is the maturation of the fruit of craving, and attachment is the maturation of the fruit of ignorance, and this should be understood. Now I should abandon the mind stained by craving and be without attachment to all dharmas. I do not study for the sake of desire, I do not study for the sake of anger, I do not study for the sake of ignorance, but I study extensively for the suchness of all dharmas, therefore I must truly observe the nature of all dharmas, practice truthfully as it is said, rely on the causes and conditions of karma and its maturation to make offerings, and also recognize that painful things arise from the causes and conditions of previous karma, therefore I do not generate joy and craving for dharmas that are in accordance, nor do I generate anger for those that are contrary to virtuous dharmas, I tame my mind, am without torment, and do not follow desire, nor do I follow anger, nor do I follow ignorance, nor do I follow sinful dharmas, I should generate such a mind. Any Bodhisattva who possesses this first dharma will obtain all perfect qualities. Then, the Blessed One, in order to clearly show this meaning, spoke in verses: I always praise wisdom, and I also praise guarding morality, I praise cultivating patience, and I also praise extensive learning. I praise the practice of virtuous dharmas, loving-kindness and pleasing speech, and for the benefit of sentient beings, I praise many qualities as appropriate. I am always far from the five desires, and from beings who have anger, resentment and ignorance, jealousy, pride, hypocrisy and strife.

The curse of harm. Laziness and idleness, Unpleasant words, talkativeness, Ungrateful, behaving improperly. Great anger over small faults, Attachment to gains, I am very happy with my own gains, Unhappy with the gains of others. I do not praise these. Narrow-minded, desiring one's own gains, Extremely jealous of the gains of others, Stingy towards the homes of others. I do not praise these. For the sake of seeking gains, Adorning one's own behavior, This is not a proper livelihood, It is very far from my Dharma. In the teachings of the path, All these faults exist. This is a cause for falling into the lower realms, Nothing is worthy of praise. If sins are not abandoned, The mind of desire will be very strong. Because the mind of desire is strong, One will become attached to gains. The Bodhisattva thinks like this: Cultivating patience, benefiting sentient beings, Thoroughly subduing the mind of arrogance, Thinking of quickly attaining Buddhahood. I cultivate loving-kindness, Cherishing sentient beings with patience. All phenomena are empty and arise from conditions, One should know that there is no connection. By what conditions do phenomena exist? These phenomena arise from the mind. If there is no unreal thought, there is no anger, All the wise ones have passed away. Unreal thought creates the three realms, The stream of the body will not be cut off. If one does not think of unreal thoughts, Then these faults will not exist. When constantly thinking of phenomena, One should know that they arise from conditions. Constantly viewing phenomena as empty, Then one can completely avert everything. Sentient beings who have abandoned the precepts suffer, To the words spoken by the arrogant, Teaching the Dharma that pacifies suffering, One can do many benefits. Whether from east, west, south, north, And from the four intermediate directions, Holding a vase filled with impure poison, Pouring it on top of one's head, Who gives, and who receives? I will not generate anger. Which Dharma is me? After examining, one should generate diligence. Knowing what faults there are, causing harm, Not looking at others with malice. Generating extremely firm patience, Benefiting them with loving-kindness. Knowing that this is caused by past actions, Thinking that this is the ripening result.
