The origin of that. Afterwards, he also obtained the Dharma that was taught. What useless words did you say? Saying these words are good. Saying that you want this thing, Even if you say please give it to me, What does a Bodhisattva possess? He says to take all the joy. If after giving alms, There will be no regrets later, In order to remember the path to Buddhahood, The mind always obtains joy. Because all sentient beings have a share, Everything will not be lacking, Saying that it makes everything satisfied, One should consider beforehand when giving alms. When practicing the Bodhi path, Hearing the names of sentient beings, Being content with oneself, May there be no stinginess or attachment. May all sentient beings in my realm, All practices of the path be content, Abandoning all attachment to the five desires, May all be inclined to renounce. Such immeasurable actions, And the completely dedicated alms, Constantly giving alms continuously, May sentient beings all learn from me. When a Bodhisattva gives alms, Because loving-kindness pervades sentient beings, In all the worlds, There will be no such happiness. For example, a wealthy householder, Possesses very much wealth and jewels, There is only one son, Who has been traveling far away for many years. The householder hears that his son has returned, Joy pervades his whole body, Knowing that he has returned today after a long time, He is very happy, with a smiling face. When a Bodhisattva sees a beggar, His mind is very happy. The joy of that householder, Cannot compare to even one-sixteenth of it. Hearing that alms are to be given, His mind is very happy, The joy arising from loving-kindness, There is no comparison for it. For example, when a king punishes a criminal, Binding him with instruments of torture and ordering, The executioner takes him to a secret place to execute him, Preparing to stab him with a weapon, If the king gives him a way to enjoy himself, Even that person's great joy, Cannot compare to the joy of a Bodhisattva giving alms to the impoverished. When a Bodhisattva practices the path, The field of merit is the multitude of people, If there are beggars, he gives to them, Therefore, he obtains great joy. When a Bodhisattva sees a Buddha and, An Arhat, a Pratyekabuddha, Because of reverence and the realization that they are rare to encounter,

Therefore, one should offer to those who accompany them. Bodhisattvas are glorious. Because their minds are clear, sharp, and gentle, and in order to cherish virtues and seek the path, one should offer to the Buddha and the Sangha. Other than the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and their Shravaka disciples, one should not offer to other gods and nagas with superior intention and reverence. If some Pratyekabuddhas attain natural Nirvana, and if one truly sees such virtues, one should also offer to them. Bodhisattvas are fields of merit. Because they can distinguish between good and non-good, one should not offer to heretical sinners who are said to be wise in the world. They are skilled in abiding in the precepts, and their loving-kindness pervades all sentient beings. Their diligence and so on are also unparalleled. Their patience, wisdom, and learning are also vast. Because they possess such virtues, they become the lords of all the world, manifest the Buddha's Bodhi, and turn the unsurpassed wheel of Dharma. If Bodhisattvas practice such four dharmas, then all roots of virtue will become manifest. All the virtues that have been cultivated in countless billions of kalpas, all of these are the path of the Bodhisattva, and this should be gathered. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should always cultivate loving-kindness. One should dwell in the mountains and gardens of renunciates, and cherish solitary places. One should always be extremely pure, uphold the profound and definitive Dharma, possess Bodhisattva conduct, and thereby increase one's own nature. The Fourth Chapter, Possessing Roots of Virtue. Chapter Four: Possessing Roots of Virtue.
