Having encountered the perfectly enlightened Buddha Chompa, who practiced not eating ghosts, he renounced the world under that Buddha's teachings and diligently and earnestly accomplished the roots of virtue for seventy thousand years, thereby fully cultivating the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhi. At that time, his name was Shula. The Thus-Gone-One, who practiced not eating ghosts, said this: After I pass into complete Nirvana, this Bhikshu Shula will manifest and realize the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhi, and will be known as the Thus-Gone-One, the Foe-Destroyer, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, the unobstructed eye. Gangpo, if a Bodhisattva possesses these three qualities, he will attain all perfect qualities. Then, at that time, the Blessed One, in order to clearly explain this meaning, spoke in verse: The Bodhisattva is profound, Having heard the pure and definite Dharma, He himself abides in it, And also teaches it to others. The depths of the world are unfathomable, But the Bodhisattva does not sink. From the pure precepts, he dwells well, And also extensively benefits beings. He speaks of the basis of discussion and realization, And shows the Buddha's path to the assembly. He shows the Buddha's path to the assembly, As spoken by the Buddhas, This is the definite Dharma. The Bodhisattva acts for the benefit of others, And also benefits sentient beings. He protects the Buddhas' Dharmas, And chooses Bodhi for the assembly. The Bodhisattva accomplishes all things, According to the Dharma, for sentient beings. By showing the Buddha's path to the assembly, The Bodhi mind becomes closer. By protecting the Buddha's path and benefiting sentient beings extensively, Gods, Nagas, demons, Rakshasas, And great beings will honor him. Therefore, having heard the perfectly pure, Empty, profound, and vast Dharma, If one focuses one's mind and cultivates it diligently, Pure wisdom will increase. Furthermore, Gangpo, the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas perfect their practices. Because their practices are perfect, they generate virtue.

is the root of, and perfects merit. What is the practice then? Any Bodhisattva relies on a spiritual friend to completely give, keep the precepts, cultivate patience, exert effort, abide in meditative concentration, and cultivate wisdom and skillful means. Who is the spiritual friend of a Bodhisattva? Any Bodhisattva from whom one can obtain the skillful means to subsequently teach such Sutras. All Buddhas, Hearers, and Bodhisattvas who strive for enlightenment with higher intention are called spiritual friends of Bodhisattvas. Any Bodhisattva who possesses these four qualities will fully attain all perfect qualities. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke in verse: I have declared to the Bodhisattvas the Dharma to be practiced, rejoicing greatly after giving, and being without regret. What is joy then? Joy pervades the whole body. With this constant joyful mind, one should practice the path to enlightenment. After a Bodhisattva gives, and initiates effort towards enlightenment, if they benefit sentient beings, they will gain immeasurable self-benefit. If one sees disciples, one should generate the perception of the Buddha, thinking, 'Today this one has come here, and has also given me the path to enlightenment.' By the power of this one, I will attain a pure land. This one has shown me the Buddha, and guides me on the path to Buddhahood. Today I have met this one, and have gained great benefit.' After joy pervades the whole body, one does not desire other things. Rejoicing and coming before (the Bodhisattva), from afar one speaks kindly, saying, 'What thing do you desire? I will give it all.' If (the other) says they do not need it, the Bodhisattva rejoices greatly, (thinking) 'This one is saying they do not need it in order to tame me.' This noble one, with the Dharma of contentment and few desires that he likes, has made me understand the meaning of coming here, and thus I obtain the conditions for enlightenment. Today I (have met) this person.
