The cessation of the last consciousness becomes the count called death. That which is the arising of the first consciousness is called birth. Great King, thus no dharma transmigrates from this world to another world, yet death and birth are manifestly present. Great King, that last consciousness does not come from anywhere at the time of birth, nor does it go anywhere at the time of cessation. That action, that birth, and that which belongs to the arising of the first consciousness, do not come from anywhere at the time of birth, nor do they go anywhere at the time of cessation. Why is that? Because there is no inherent existence. The last consciousness is empty of all consciousness. The first consciousness is empty of the first consciousness. Action is empty of action. Death is empty of death. Birth is empty of birth. But actions do not become without fruit, and the experience of ripening is manifest, but other than the designation of names, there is no agent or enjoyer. Thirteenth fascicle. Great King, it is like a person who dreams in a sleepy dream of being pressed by a ghost, and becomes very bewildered by fear. When he wakes up from sleep and remembers that ghost and the state of being very bewildered, Great King, what do you think? Does the ghost seen in the dream and the state of being very bewildered exist? He replied: Blessed One, it does not exist. The Buddha said: Great King, what do you think? Then, is that person who clings to the ghost seen in the dream and becomes very bewildered, of the nature of wisdom? He replied: Blessed One, it is not so. Why is that? Blessed One, if the ghost in the dream does not exist at all, how can there be great bewilderment? Moreover, that person who clings to it will become a person of poverty and fatigue. The Blessed One said: Great King, similarly, when ignorant common people without learning see forms with their eyes, they will also become attached to those things that should be regarded with equanimity. Because of attachment, they become very bewildered. Having become very bewildered, they become completely afflicted. Comp

The karma arising from afflictions and ignorance manifests in three ways through the body, four ways through speech, and three ways through the mind. The karma that is manifested, from the very beginning, is exhausted, ceases, separates, and transforms. It does not depend on the east to exist, nor does it depend on the south, west, north, above, or any direction. It is not here, it is not there, it is not in between. At other times, when the time and moment of death are near, the power of life ceases, life is completely exhausted, and the karmas associated with it are also exhausted. When the final consciousness ceases, for example, just as a ghost awakened from sleep or someone extremely ignorant, the mind becomes an object. Great king, by the power of the final consciousness, the manifestation of karma, and the two conditions, the first consciousness belonging to birth arises. When that first consciousness ceases, immediately and without interruption, a similar potential arises in the mind-stream where the ripening is experienced. Therefore, the cessation of the final consciousness is counted as death. The arising of the first consciousness is called birth. Great king, in this way, no dharma transmigrates from this world to another world, but death and birth are manifestly present. Great king, that final consciousness does not come from anywhere at the time of birth, nor does it go anywhere at the time of cessation. That karma also does not come from anywhere at the time of birth, nor does it go anywhere at the time of cessation. That first consciousness also does not come from anywhere at the time of birth, nor does it go anywhere at the time of cessation. Why is that? Because there is no inherent existence. The final consciousness is empty of the final consciousness, karma is empty of karma, the first consciousness is empty of the first consciousness, death is empty of death, birth is empty of birth. Karma does not become without result, but the manifestation of experiencing ripening is also present. Therefore, apart from the mere convention of names, there is no agent or experiencer whatsoever. Great king, for example, the eye
