Chapter Twenty-Six: The Prophecy of Shakya. Chapter Twenty-Six: The Prophecy of Shakya. Then, King Śuddhodana and his retinue, having heard the prophecies from the Asuras to the flying deities, and to the wanderers, thought to themselves: "It is wonderful that the Blessed One has spoken so well, satisfying all beings!" And because of his affection for his son, everything became auspicious. Then, the Blessed One, knowing the mind of King Śuddhodana, spoke to King Śuddhodana: "Great King, for you, the pure conduct is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end. The meaning is good, the words are good, unmixed, complete, pure, and excellent. This is the Dharma called the 'Differentiation of the Six Elements.' Listen well and keep it in mind, and I will explain it." King Śuddhodana replied: "Blessed One, very good!" Then King Śuddhodana respectfully listened to the teachings of the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: "Great King, what is the Dharma called the 'Differentiation of the Six Elements'? Great King, this person, this individual, is of the six elements, the six sense-spheres of contact, and the eighteen mental applications. When it is said that a person is of the six elements, upon what does that depend? Great King, these are the six elements. What are the six? They are: the earth element, the water element, the fire element, the wind element, the space element, and the consciousness element. Great King, these are the six elements. When I say that a person is of the six elements, it is based on that. When it is said that a person is of the six sense-spheres of contact, upon what does that depend? Great King, these are the six sense-spheres of contact: the eye sense-sphere of contact for seeing forms, the ear sense-sphere of contact for hearing sounds, the nose sense-sphere of contact for smelling odors, the tongue sense-sphere of contact for tasting flavors,

For that reason, the birthplace of body contact, and for completely understanding all dharmas, the birthplace of mind contact. Great King, those are the six birthplaces of contact. What I said, "This person is the six birthplaces of contact," was said based on that. Great King, what I said, "This person is the eighteen kinds of mental activities," based on what was it said? Great King, the eighteen kinds of mental activities are like this. What are the eighteen? Here, when the eye sees forms, if one feels pleasure, displeasure, or becomes neutral, that is the mental activity towards forms. When the ear hears sounds, if one feels pleasure, displeasure, or becomes neutral, that is the mental activity towards sounds. When the nose smells odors, if one feels pleasure, displeasure, or becomes neutral, that is the mental activity towards odors. When the tongue tastes flavors, if one feels pleasure, displeasure, or becomes neutral, that is the mental activity towards flavors. When the body touches tangibles, if one feels pleasure, displeasure, or becomes neutral, that is the mental activity towards tangibles. When the mind contacts dharmas, if one feels pleasure, displeasure, or becomes neutral, that is the mental activity towards dharmas. Great King, those six kinds of mental activities that feel pleasure, and those six kinds of mental activities that feel displeasure, and those six kinds of mental activities that become neutral, if they are combined into one, they become eighteen kinds of mental activities. Great King, those eighteen are the mental activities. Great King, what I said, "This person is the eighteen kinds of mental activities," was said based on that. Great King, the earth element is of two kinds, namely internal and external. Great King, what is the internal earth element? Whatever it may be, in this body, inside, it has the nature of being hard, rigid, and is close and grasped. And what is that? For example, hair, body hair, nails, teeth, dust, dirt, skin, flesh, veins, tendons, bones, legs, heart, liver, lungs, and so on.
