The realm of visual consciousness is empty of the realm of visual consciousness itself. This term is neither male nor female. Thus, realize it with true wisdom as it truly is. Great King, what is the source of the eye? It is the combination of the four great elements, namely the earth element, the water element, the fire element, and the wind element. Among them, that which is combined with the earth element is not the source of the eye. Nor is that which is combined with the water element. Nor is that which is combined with the fire element. Nor is that which is combined with the wind element the source of the eye. Why is that? That which is combined with the earth element is not a source for any dharma, nor does it closely abide in order to obtain a source. Likewise, that which is combined between the wind elements is not a source for any dharma, nor does it closely abide in order to obtain a source. Why is that? Those dharmas are without mind, without action, and without any power. Great King, if one searches for each of the dharmas individually, the source of the eye is not found apart from mere terms. Why is that? That which is combined with the earth element is empty of that which is combined with the earth element. That which is combined between the wind elements is empty of that which is combined with the wind elements. How could there be combination or disturbance in those dharmas that are empty of their own nature? If combination or disturbance is not found in them, how could they see form? Thus, the nature of the source of the eye is utterly empty. Because it has no coming and going, it is not found at the prior limit, nor is it found at the later limit. Because it has no own nature, dwelling in it is also not found. That which is without own nature is neither female nor male. That which is neither female nor male, how could it give rise to pride? Great King, pride is the realm of activity of the demons, and the absence of pride is the realm of activity of the Buddhas. Why is that? All dharmas are free from pride. Great King, if one truly realizes it as it is, then the source of the eye is empty of the source of the eye. Why is that? This source of the eye has no characteristics, therefore this characteristic of the source of the eye

The eye's birthplace is empty; this is emptiness. The eye's birthplace is devoid of characteristics; this is without characteristics. It does not desire, so this is without desire. Great King, thus the eye's birthplace is the three doors of liberation, the eye's birthplace is inclined towards liberation. Great King, what is between the birthplace of the ear and the birthplace of the body? It is the four great elements. Great King, thus among all dharmas is inclination towards liberation, certainty in the realm of dharma, the limit of the sky element is endless, unassignable, without name, unspeakable, not to be spoken. Great King, to what sense faculties does attachment arise? That is the knowable object, the eye will become attached to forms, therefore forms are called the object of the eye. Similarly, the ear to sounds, the nose to smells, the tongue to tastes, the body to tactile sensations, the mind to dharmas, therefore dharmas are called the object of the mind. Among them, the eye is attached to forms, which shows that it is the attachment of falling into. In this way, the eye falls into forms in three ways: for compatible things, it falls with the thought of suffering; for incompatible things, it falls with the thought of anger; and for things that are neither compatible nor incompatible, it falls with the thought of equanimity. Similarly, the mind is attached to dharmas, which shows that it is the attachment of falling into. In this way, the mind falls into dharmas in three ways: for compatible things, it falls with the thought of following attachment; for incompatible things, it falls with the thought of anger; and for things that are neither compatible nor incompatible, it falls with the thought of delusion, those realms are called the realm of the mind, therefore the mind acts and fully acts there, so it is called the realm of the mind. Great King, the mind acts with attachment to compatible forms, that will cause his desire to arise. Acting angrily towards incompatible forms will cause his... to arise.
