Why is that? Because of emptiness of inherent existence. The last consciousness is empty of the inherent existence of the last consciousness, up to samsara being empty of the inherent existence of samsara. Great King, thus all dharmas being empty, this is the door to liberation, emptiness. That which is empty of the characteristic of emptiness, this is the door to liberation, without characteristics. That which has no characteristics, has no aspiration, this is the door to liberation, without aspiration. Great King, thus all dharmas are the door to liberation, inclining towards nirvana, truly absorbed in emptiness, certain in the realm of dharma, reaching the limit of the realm of space. Great King, for example, a person dreams in a sleeping dream that his own bodily faculties have deteriorated. When he wakes up from sleep and remembers that, Great King, what do you think? Does the deterioration of the bodily faculties seen in the dream exist? Answer: Blessed One, it does not exist. The Buddha said: Great King, what do you think? Then, is clinging to the deterioration of the bodily faculties in the dream a characteristic of wisdom? Answer: Blessed One, it is not. Why is that? Blessed One, the bodily faculties seen in the dream do not exist and cannot be seen, so how can there be deterioration? The Blessed One said: Great King, likewise, ordinary people who have not heard the teachings, when the body touches objects of touch, they will cling to those things that should be abandoned. After clinging, they become very foolish. After becoming very foolish, the actions arising from ignorance, the body performs three kinds, the speech performs four kinds, and the mind performs three kinds. The actions performed are exhausted, ceased, separated, and transformed from the very beginning. It does not depend on the east to exist, and it is not here, not there, not in the intermediate state. At other times, when the time and moment of death are near, the root of life ceases, and life is completely diminished, and the actions of the same fate are exhausted, and the last consciousness...

At the time of death, one should contemplate in this way, just as when a sleeping person awakens, the physical senses decline, so too should the mind focus on this. Great King, for him, after the cessation of the final consciousness, due to the focus of karma and the two factors of conditions, the initial consciousness belonging to the category of arising will occur. As soon as that initial consciousness ceases, immediately and without interruption, there will arise the manifest mind-continuum, similar to a share, which will experience the ripening result. Among these, the cessation of the final consciousness is counted as death-transference. The arising of the initial consciousness is counted as birth. Great King, in this way, there is no phenomenon that transfers from this world to another world, but death-transference and birth are manifest. Great King, from the final consciousness to the initial consciousness, at the time of birth, it does not come from anywhere; at the time of cessation, it does not go anywhere. Why is that? Because its nature is emptiness. The final consciousness is empty of the final consciousness, and samsara is empty of the nature of samsara. Actions are not wasted, and the experience of ripening results is also manifest. Therefore, apart from mere designation, there is no agent or enjoyer. Fourteenth Chapter Great King, for example, a person dreams that in his sleep a magician conjures up objects endowed with the five desirable qualities, and he dreams of enjoying them very contentedly. When he awakens from sleep and remembers those desirable qualities, Great King, what do you think? Do those five desirable qualities seen in the dream, conjured up by the magician, exist? He replied: Blessed One, they do not exist. The Buddha said: Great King, what do you think? Then, is it the nature of the wise to be attached to those five desirable qualities seen in the dream, and to those conjured up by the magician? He replied: Blessed One, it is not. Why is that? Blessed One, the magician in the dream himself does not exist and cannot be observed, let alone the five desirable qualities conjured up, and the enjoyment of them? Moreover,
