Also, when they are exhausted and the final consciousness ceases, it is like this: for example, when one awakens from sleep, the mind will focus on it like a door that does not understand the meaning of words. Great King, for that consciousness, and the karma that is focused on, and the first consciousness belonging to the category of arising from two causes arises. As soon as the first consciousness ceases, without interruption, the stream of mind that will manifestly experience ripening arises like a portion. Among them, the cessation of the final consciousness is counted as death transference. The arising of the first consciousness is counted as birth. Great King, in that case, no dharma is transferred from this world to another world, but death transference and birth are manifest. Great King, that final consciousness does not come from anywhere at the time of birth. At the time of cessation, it does not go anywhere either. That karma does not come from anywhere at the time of birth. At the time of cessation, it does not go anywhere either. That first consciousness does not come from anywhere at the time of birth. At the time of cessation, it does not go anywhere either. Why is that? Because by nature it is empty. The final consciousness is empty of the final consciousness. Karma is empty of karma. Ripening is empty of the nature of ripening. The first consciousness is empty of the nature of the first consciousness. Death transference and birth are empty of the nature of death transference and birth. Samsara is empty of the nature of samsara. But karma is not wasted, and the experience of ripening is manifest. For this, there is no agent or enjoyer other than a mere designation. Great King, for example, a person dreams in a sleeping dream that sandalwood, or tamala leaves, or any other kind of incense touches his body. After waking up from sleep, if he remembers the sandalwood, or tamala leaves, or any other kind of incense. Great King, what do you think? Do the sandalwood, or tamala leaves, or any other kind of incense seen in the dream exist? He replied: Blessed One, they do not exist. The Buddha said: Great King,

Great King, what do you think? If that is the case, is it the nature of the wise to be attached to the sandalwood seen in dreams, or the tamala leaves, or any kind of fragrance, and thereby make my body dull? He replied: World Honored One, that is not the case. Why is that? World Honored One, the sandalwood in dreams, or the tamala leaves, or any kind of fragrance, those themselves are completely non-existent and invisible, how could they have dullness? Otherwise, the person who is attached to them will become a person with a destiny of poverty and exhaustion. The World Honored One said: Great King, similarly, ignorant ordinary people who have not heard the teachings, if their noses smell a fragrance and they feel happy, they will become attached to them. Because of attachment, they will develop craving. Having developed craving, they will become completely attached. Having become completely attached, the karma arising from desire, the body performs three kinds, the speech performs four kinds, and the mind performs three kinds. The karma that is performed, from the very beginning, is exhausted, stopped, separated, and transformed. It does not depend on the east to exist, nor does it depend on the south, west, north, below, above, and the intermediate directions to exist. It is not in the past life, nor in the bardo, but at other times, when the time and opportunity of death are near, the life force stops, and the lifespan is completely exhausted, and the karmas similar to this destiny are also exhausted, and when the last consciousness stops, it is like waking up from sleep, the sandalwood, or the tamala leaves, or any kind of fragrance, will become the object of the mind. Great King, for that power of the last consciousness, and the object of karma, and these two conditions, the first consciousness belonging to the category of birth will arise. Immediately after that first consciousness stops, without any interruption, the manifest mind-stream and similar destiny that will experience the ripening result will arise. Among them, whichever is the stopping of the last consciousness, that will be counted as death. Whichever is the arising of the first consciousness, that will be counted as birth.
