Those who are attached to desires, carried away by the waters of enjoyment of desires, I regard them as a blind man carried away by water, dwelling in prison, in a state of distress. O lord of men, you are like a blind man, while I am like one with eyes, seeing the difference. You are carried away by the waters of desire, while I utterly despise all desires. Desires are like poisonous leaves, like the head of a snake, causing suffering, like a trident, a sword, a short spear, like a blazing fire. The wise one spoke thus, to his wailing father and retinue: Without regard for the seven precious things, renouncing the kingdom, he went forth. Like discarding a snake's slough, like discarding ashes that have been sucked, the wise one, without attachment, renouncing evil, went forth. After the youth had thus gone forth, a minister's son also went forth after him, named Chandra-datta, he went forth after the wise one. After the youth had thus gone forth, having generated the four Brahma-viharas, together with his companions, he generated the five superknowledges, all of them. Because of seeing faults in desires, that lion among men, in order to obtain true Brahma from the desire realm, turned the wheel of Brahma. Thus, after the youth had gone forth, the father no longer trusted his son, and so he went to Chandra-datta, and with excellent words made him happy. Charga, what do you think of this? Was the wise one another person at that time? I myself was him at that time, not seeking the enjoyment of desires. Charga, what do you think of this? Was Truth-increasing another person? The lord of men, Shuddhodana, was the king Truth-increasing at that time. Charga, what do you think of this? Was Chandra-datta, who went forth after him, another person? You yourself at that time, in that era, were the obstructer of Truth-increasing. Therefore, Charga, you here, should cause King Shuddhodana to generate faith. If this protector of the earth generates faith, then...

will become very complete. Then, the Venerable Ashvajit promised the Blessed One that he would not speak. Then, the Venerable Ashvajit After that day passed, in the morning, he put on his robes and skirt. Carrying his bowl, he went to the great city of Kapilavastu. At that time, King Śuddhodana, in front of his consorts and retinue, was gathered with about a thousand Śākyas for some purpose. King Śuddhodana also heard that the Blessed One had come to Kapilavastu and was staying in the Nyagrodha Park in Kapilavastu, and he thought to himself: That young man, by becoming a renunciate, has caused me to lose great wealth and enjoyment. If that young man were to remain at home, he would become a Chakravartin king, victorious in the four directions, possessing Dharma, a king of Dharma, possessing the seven precious jewels. His seven precious jewels are: the precious wheel, the precious elephant, the precious horse, the precious jewel, the precious woman, the precious householder, and the precious minister, these seven. He would also have a thousand brave sons, who are heroic and fearless, possessing excellent physiques, and able to destroy the armies of others. He would pacify this world of the four great continents with Dharma, without punishment or pursuit with weapons, equally and justly, without inequality, and would perfectly protect it until the end of the kalpa. If that were the case, we would also possess the power of a Chakravartin king, possessing the power of wealth, and would be served, respected, honored, and offered to, and we would also obtain great power of wealth. But now, we have lost such great power of enjoyment because that young man has become a renunciate. Thinking this, he admonished the Śākyas: Let no one go to visit or serve my son. If anyone goes to visit or serve my son, they will be punished with bodily harm. At that time, a Śākya son named Joyful Face

A certain action arose from that retinue and went away. The Shakya son Joyful Countenance, seeing the venerable Arcana coming from afar, went to the venerable Arcana and greatly rejoiced in the venerable Arcana, saying: "Venerable Arcana, it is good that you have come! Venerable Arcana, you have come after a long time! Venerable Arcana, does the Blessed One have no illness? Does he have strength? Does he dwell in comfort? Does he have no discomfort? Does he have no fear at all? Has the Blessed One come in peace? Is he not very weary? Is he not troubled by alms?" Having said this, the venerable Arcana said to the Shakya son Joyful Countenance: "Joyful Countenance, it is just so. The Blessed One has no illness. He has strength. He dwells in comfort. He has no discomfort. He has no fear at all. He has come in peace. He has no weariness. He is not troubled by alms." The Shakya son Very Well Awakened also saw the Shakya son Joyful Countenance dwelling in solitude with the venerable Arcana, and coming from that retinue, he went to the venerable Arcana and greatly rejoiced in the venerable Arcana, saying: "Venerable Arcana, please come here.
