Having risen from his seat, arranged his upper robe over one shoulder, pressed his right knee into the ground, and, with his palms joined together, bowed towards the Blessed One, he said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, I have come to have complete faith in King Śuddhodana." After he had spoken thus, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ajñātakauṇḍinya: "Kauṇḍinya, you should remain in a state of being worthy of being revered as a guru." Similarly, the venerable Raṃpa, Mahānāma, Yaśaḥprada, Vṛddhyābhāsa, Udakābhāsa, Gayābhāsa, Mahābhāsa, and the venerable Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana also said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, we have come to have complete faith in King Śuddhodana." After they had spoken thus, the Blessed One, Mahāmaudgalyāyana thought to himself: "Which monk, who would cause King Śuddhodana to have complete faith, would the Blessed One approve of?" Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana entered into such a state of samādhi. Having entered into such a state of samādhi, he thought with his mind: "Whom would the Blessed One approve of?" Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana entered into such a state of samādhi. Having entered into such a state of samādhi, with his mind he saw the Blessed One's thought that the venerable Aśvaka was dwelling there, and that the monk Aśvaka would cause King Śuddhodana to have complete faith. Just as, for example, in a storied house or a balcony of a storied house facing north, a ray of sunlight comes from an eastern window and shines on the western wall, so at that time the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana saw the Blessed One's thought appearing to the venerable Aśvaka, and that the monk Aśvaka would cause King Śuddhodana to have complete faith. Then, the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana arose from that samādhi, went to where the venerable Aśvaka was, and said to the venerable Aśvaka: "Venerable Aśvaka, the Blessed One

The Blessed One thought and wished that the monk Ajata could make King Suddhodana completely believe. Venerable Ajata, that is so. You should first generate faith in King Suddhodana. After saying this, the Venerable Ajata said to the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana: Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, it is very difficult to make all kinds of people believe, especially kings. Why is that? Because kings, those who are crowned from the royal family, are difficult to please. Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, for example, suppose there are ten bundles, twenty bundles, thirty bundles, forty bundles, fifty bundles, or even a hundred bundles of dry and long-stored firewood. If someone lights it, the fire will burn. If someone pours ghee or oil on it, the fire will burn even bigger, and it is very difficult to approach it or walk around it. Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, similarly, kings, those who are crowned from the royal family, are difficult to please. Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, for example, it is very difficult to enter the gap between the tusks of an elephant with its mouth open and tusks exposed. Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, similarly, kings, those who are crowned from the royal family, are also difficult to please. After saying this, the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana said to the Venerable Ajata: Venerable Ajata, although that is so, the Blessed One thinks and wishes that you, the monk Ajata, can make King Suddhodana completely believe. Said: Venerable Great Maudgalyayana, does the Blessed One think that I can make King Suddhodana believe? Said: Venerable Ajata, that is so. The Blessed One thinks that the monk Ajata can make King Suddhodana believe. Then, the Blessed One himself said to the Venerable Ajata: Ajata, make King Suddhodana believe! Why is that?

Why is that? Karka, either I will make King Suddhodana believe, or you will make him believe. Karka, among my Shravaka disciples, you are the best at persuading with reason. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke in verse to the venerable Karka: Karka, listen well to me, you are the best at persuading with reason. To make the Shakya clan rejoice, make the noble king completely believe. If the noble king believes, then for the sons of the lineage, gods, and humans, there will be limitless benefits. The noble one of men should quickly believe. Now, the lord of the Shakyas is disturbed and weakened by the arrogance of delusion. Like a wave rolling down from a mountain slope, he has abandoned all effort and remains. Remembering the loss of power, his mind is harmed, and he has lost faith and will. For example, a merchant who has lost wealth remembers the past and dwells in affliction. Like gods who die and transmigrate from the heavenly realm, remembering the pleasures of the gods. He does not know the teachings of the Victorious One, and the king has lost happiness and pitifully laments. Remembering my seven precious jewels, and the four perfections of humans, and all kinds of enjoyments, this lord of the earth pitifully laments. Just as a person's radiance is stolen by a powerful flesh-eating demon, and he is completely suppressed, so that he does not recognize himself or others, so too is this lord of the earth. Just as Mount Kailash is obscured by snow and ice, so that people cannot see it, so too, because he is obscured by great arrogance, the king cannot see what should be seen. Just as a person who is intoxicated by sleep or death does not know his own mind, so too, because he is intoxicated by great arrogance, the king does not know virtue. For example, a woman who is distraught by the death of a family member pitifully laments, so too, because he is intoxicated by great arrogance, the king pitifully laments. Therefore, Karka, skillful in means, make the king believe here. Conquer arrogance.
