What is a Bodhisattva's proper engagement? How does a Bodhisattva engage properly? Therefore, it is taught as follows: A Bodhisattva does not engage in any Dharma of a great mind. The term 'proper engagement' means the supreme meaning of non-engagement. Furthermore, a Bodhisattva's proper engagement is not to utter sounds, not to utter repetitions, and not to fixate on where the sound arises from. Where does the sound itself arise from? Where does it cease? Thus, one contemplates the past and future limits. Whatever has been spoken, whatever is being spoken, whatever will be spoken, whoever has spoken, whoever is speaking, whoever will be speaking, whatever has been spoken for the sake of abandoning, whatever is being spoken for the sake of abandoning, whatever will be spoken for the sake of abandoning, whatever has been spoken for the sake of understanding, whatever is being spoken for the sake of understanding, whatever will be spoken for the sake of understanding—if all these are thoroughly sought, one does not fixate on the aspect of the past, the aspect of the future, or the aspect of the present. That is their proper engagement, and thus it is taught. How does a Bodhisattva, engaging properly in this way, see properly? Therefore, it is taught as follows: When a Bodhisattva sees all Dharmas as naturally ceased, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as naturally pacified, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as completely pacified, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as naturally not equally entered, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as unborn, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as unarisen, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as not truly arisen, at that time, they see properly. When they see all Dharmas as in Nirvana, at that time, they see properly. One also contemplates who sees these, seeing in such a way that one does not see or contemplate in any way. If one sees in this way, it is called proper seeing. Again, it is taught as follows:

O noble son, a Bodhisattva who applies proper attention has no doubt or confusion about any dharma. Applying proper attention means there is no obscuration regarding any dharma. Applying proper attention means that any dharma can become a gateway to liberation. Applying proper attention means there is no need to strive to abandon any dharma. Applying proper attention means there is no need to strive to realize any dharma. Seeing all dharmas correctly and seeing them as they are is correct view. What is seeing all dharmas as they are? It is not seeing. "Not seeing" is another expression for "unborn." "Unborn" is another expression for "not truly arisen." What is "not truly arisen"? It is another expression for "non-appearance." When the Tathagata sees from afar that all conditioned phenomena do not arise, he enters the certainty of reality. For example, entering the certainty of reality is correct view. Thus it is said. He thinks to himself: Why is it called "entering the certainty of reality"? He learns as follows: All dharmas are equal to the Buddha's dharma, therefore it is "entering the certainty of reality." Therefore, those who wish to enter the certainty of reality should listen very carefully to this category of the Bodhisattva's treasury, receive it, hold it, recite it, and fully understand it. One should also apply proper attention to this category of the Bodhisattva's treasury of dharma. Shariputra, that is how a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom. Shariputra, furthermore, when a Bodhisattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, his intelligence is thoroughly cultivated, and the door of dharma appearance is thoroughly purified. If he strives in proper attention, he will see the word of proper attention. What is proper attention? What is the word of proper attention? Thus, the Bodhisattva's proper attention is as follows: entering the state of calm abiding and entering the discernment of insight is proper attention. Entering physical solitude.
